Another great self-contained campaign
By William M. Wilson
Being objective with this one is hard, because I'm not really a big Forgotten Realms fan. I love the original 1e Grey Box, but past then, I just haven't liked it much. It's fair to say that even the (imo, underrated) 4e setting is one of my least favorite settings. Still, I know enough to trust WotC with setting books by this point, so I ended up snagging it. It's a remarkably well-done example of something I don't necessarily care for, if that makes sense. I don't know that I will ever run a Forgotten Realms game again, but if I do, this will be a good place to start.

Much like Gloomwrought, this is a self-contained campaign. If you have this and the game rules (and DDI for monsters), you can run a full Heroic-tier campaign - honestly, *several* Heroic-tier campaigns - easily. Please do note - although the mechanics cover all 30 levels, this setting is specifically and intentionally focused on the Heroic tier.

After a brief intro, the book starts out with about 65 pages' worth of some great crunch and fluff, mixed together in the new style. I'll focus on this, with an eye towards whether or not it's easily portable to other settings and other games.

We start out with 13 flavorful, setting-specific themes. This year, it looks like Themes will be a major focus in new rules development, and while I love them, I also hope they don't become 4e's Prestige Classes for content bloat. Still, these are pretty spectacular, though I think that a few (*cough*Pack Outcast*cough*) may be a bit too powerful. They provide a lot of neat stuff, such as two Themes that let a character turn into animals, a Theme version of the FRPG's Spellscars, and just some general great ways to tie your character into the FR setting. While they are very cool, I'm not a big fan of the race restrictions. Maybe I'm alone there, though, and it's easy enough to house-rule, provided the Character Builder is kept flexible! I think all of them can possibly be reskinned to another setting, though several - like the Harper Agent, Pack Outcast, and Dead Rat Deserter - might require some mental gymnastics. Each has a two-page writeup with a ton of fluff, and an associated Background.

(For those wondering, these are all the newer-style themes, like those found recently in Dragon 399. That is, they offer Level 1, 5, and 10 features, a Level 1 Encounter power, and Heroic-tier Utility Power swaps... but no Attack Power swaps. They're great, but be advised that they are a bit more direct power creep than the Dark Sun themes, because they offer more than just an Encounter attack - in a few cases quite a lot - for nothing. On the upside, they are equally valuable to all PCs, no matter what Class they have.)

Following this is a longer-than-expected section detailing Racial Variants. The FRPG dug into this a bit with a few feats, but this book really expands on the idea. They let your Elf, Dwarf, or Eladrin be an FR-specific Moon, Sun, Wood, or Wild Elf; or Shield or Gold Dwarf. Each offers a swap for their racial features, in addition to some excellent role-playing tips and backgrounds.

Warpriest Domains come next. There are four of them, and all of them look very capable. They are all FR-specific, but again, they should be pretty easily reskinnable. This continues the Realms' tradition from 2e of differentiating clerics of different gods, and it's a welcome development. (There's also a quick sidebar on which domains to use for other gods in the Realms). There's Corellon, which provides some Ranged support and a lot of movement; Oghma which incorporates knowledge, song, and psychic attacks; Selune for cold and radiant blessings with a focus on saving throws; and Torm for a near-Defender Warpriest. They are full 1-30 Domains, and all of the Powers are available to regular Clerics as well if your player can't or doesn't want to play a Warpriest.

The last part of the crunch is also one of the more controversial, if you check around some message boards. The Bladesinger from 2e's Complete Book of Elves is back, and how!

Somewhat confusingly, the Bladesinger is a Wizard subclass. Although it's called a Controller, I'd say it's really a Striker with some control on the side. And, frankly, it looks like it will play kind of similarly to a Monk. They focus on Basic Attacks with blades, and get to buff them up with their At-Will Bladesongs on a hit. These Bladesongs are just great; they let the Bladesinger zap an enemy within 10 squares with some minor damage and a light control effects whenever they hit with their swords. Their beginning Encounter power is an impressive two-round buff, but their Daily powers ... are Wizard Encounter powers. I know, "Hrm?" It's a weak point of the class, but I have a feeling their other perks will make up for it; I have yet to see it in action, though.

I was most worried that the Bladesinger would operate in a similar design space to the Swordmage from the FRPG ... and it really *doesn't*. The Bladesinger is a Striker/Controller, and the Swordmage is a Defender/Controller, and they look like they will play very differently. The Swordmage is its own brand-new 4e thing, but the Bladesinger really does look and work like a classic 2e Fighter/Mage, down to using actual Wizard spells at a lower level of mastery. (I think there's some wasted space here in reprinting the Wizard powers from HotFL, but YMMV.)

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

OK, so on to the non-crunch stuff.

Much like in Gloomwrought, Neverwinter gives the DM a big collection of Sandbox tools. The next ... wow, almost 50 pages ... detail the most important factions in Neverwinter along with suggestions on how to use them in a game. The adventure hook ideas almost jump off the page. Unlike in Gloomwrought, each Faction is presented with a list of monsters with their levels, roles, and sources, rather than a large collection of brand-new foes. I think it's perfectly workable, and it looks to depend a lot on monsters from the recent Threats to Nentir Vale. I'm great with this; I don't need too many more Heroic-tier monsters right now! There are a few new ones, mind you, generally at least one per faction, but it mostly depends on support from earlier books or DDI. Awesomely, each faction also has a Theme Tie-In sidebar to show how to get your players' characters involved with all these power groups.

The next 65 or so pages are the main Gazetteer of Neverwinter. Again, hooks are everywhere, and you can tell this was written by Dungeon Masters, for Dungeon Masters. Even not being a fan of the Realms, this is pretty great, and the whole post-apocalyptic city vibe is pretty thrilling. There are sidebars on almost every page, providing either rules elements or a deeper focus on items of interest. The whole Neverwinter area is covered, from the city to outlying towns to geographical features. Many were familiar to me from playing the Neverwinter Nights series of computer RPGs, and again there are a ton of theme tie-ins to hook your PCs into the setting.

The last section of the book honestly came as a surprise to me; I didn't expect it at all. Evernight, the Shadowfell version of Neverwinter and its environs, are given an overview for the next few pages. The art here is great; I'm especially fond of the art for the Corpse Market.

A few pages on Thay and a Floating Fortress later and we're done. There's a tear-out map bound near the back cover, which I will remove if I end up using the book!

So ... overall impressions? This is the first time in about 15+ years that running a campaign in the Forgotten Realms has seemed at all interesting or fun, and the more I dig into this book, the more fun it seems. I rather wish this had come out closer on the heels of the original 4e Campaign Setting, because it makes the entire setting better, and might have done a little to explain the Spellplague and its effects to critics.

I'd rate it as a must-have for just about anyone running a 4e Realms campaign, and for anyone looking for a Heroic-tier campaign setting. Its usefulness for ongoing games, particularly non-Realms games, is more questionable, but I expect several DMs will try and sell their players on starting it all over again in Neverwinter!

Turning the Dial to 11
By T. Sporcic
One of the problems with a lot of the previous 4E supplements was that they were more focused on rules (crunch) rather than roleplaying. It is obvious WotC took that criticism to heart and turned the dial up to 11 with this setting for the roleplaying side of things. I've always been a fan of the Forgotten Realms setting, and this book feels like a comfortable blast from the past. It goes into great detail on fleshing out a city in turmoil.

The character themes takes a page from Pathfinder's factions. They essentially give each character an agenda outside of their role with the party. These can give a creative GM some interesting hooks and is a welcome addition. I can give or take the Bladesinger, but more options are always welcome. The Gazetteer section is very well done, bringing a lot of interesting detail and adventure hooks to the Neverwinter region.

The Factions and Foes are the meat of the book for GMs, and it is the only area where I find fault. There are five primary factions and numerous secondary factions, all vying for control of Neverwinter or the region. I guess the thinking was "if one is good, ten are better", but I think they achieved overkill in this case. A DM is going to have to decide on the one or two factions they want to deal with, or the campaign would become overwhelming. If you incorporate all them, it will almost seem that everyone the party meets is going to have a hidden agenda. Excess paranoia can jade the party and ruin the fun.

So kudos to WotC on creating a great roleplaying supplement, but it still needs to be taken in moderation unless you and your party enjoy juggling so many competing agendas.

Favorite Campaign Setting So Far
By Justin C. Vierra
I'm not the most experienced or hardcore DM; I've only run 4e campaigns and all at the heroic tier, but I've read the Dark Sun, and Forgotten Realms campaign guides. This book is much different than previous 4e supplements, and definitely in a good way. The hooks are much better thought out, the character themes interplay very well not only with eachother but also with the city's factions, and the fluff is very deep. This might just be my style of play talking, but I really feel like the authors did a great job of giving plenty of guidance without tying your hands or railroading you. All in all, I'm very excited to run games in a Neverwinter setting.

Excellent Book!
By B. E. Sturgeon
I recently picked up my wife's copy of this book. She used this text when in college. I am amazed at how wonderful this book is (I am not sure the author would agree with the grammatical structure of the previous sentence, but this is an informal review). The book is separated into 3 parts: Elements of Research, Techniques, and Experiments. The section on "Elements of Research" is wonderful and is a must read for all pchem students. This part is an excellent reference for any scientist. The "Techniques" part is out of date as far as computers are concerned, but 4 out of the 6 chapters are still relevant dealing with glass handling/blowing, vacuum techniques, temperature measurements, and general instrumentation guts. The "Experiments" part makes up ~ 50% of the text (350 of 800 pages). These experiments represent a good range of both thermodynamics-related and quantum mechanics-related concepts.

No Enchanted Palace: The End of Empire and the Ideological Origins of the United Nations (The Lawrence Stone Lectures), by Mark Mazower

No Enchanted Palace traces the origins and early development of the United Nations, one of the most influential yet perhaps least understood organizations active in the world today. Acclaimed historian Mark Mazower forces us to set aside the popular myth that the UN miraculously rose from the ashes of World War II as the guardian of a new and peaceful global order, offering instead a strikingly original interpretation of the UN's ideological roots, early history, and changing role in world affairs.

Mazower brings the founding of the UN brilliantly to life. He shows how the UN's creators envisioned a world organization that would protect the interests of empire, yet how this imperial vision was decisively reshaped by the postwar reaffirmation of national sovereignty and the unanticipated rise of India and other former colonial powers. This is a story told through the clash of personalities, such as South African statesman Jan Smuts, who saw in the UN a means to protect the old imperial and racial order; Raphael Lemkin and Joseph Schechtman, Jewish intellectuals at odds over how the UN should combat genocide and other atrocities; and Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, who helped transform the UN from an instrument of empire into a forum for ending it.

A much-needed historical reappraisal of the early development of this vital world institution, No Enchanted Palace reveals how the UN outgrew its origins and has exhibited an extraordinary flexibility that has enabled it to endure to the present day.

The Slow Death of Imperialism
By Richard C. Geschke
To most people the United Nations was created after World War II to provide an international organization that would help prevent armed conflicts throughout the world. After suffering through two world wars and the failure of the League of Nations, the United Nations was to provide the vehicle to prevent these catastrophes from happening again.
The above scenario describes the so-called sanitized version of the forming of the United Nations. What Mazower brings to the table is something very different. The Author goes into the imperialistic ways of the League of Nations with an in depth look at the thoughts and politics of Jan Smuts whose perception of an international organization would resemble the likes of the British Commonwealth. In essence the victors of World War I, along with the demands of The Treaty of Versailles created the League of Nations which was nothing more than a vehicle to dictate terms to the vanquished. In essence the very European imperialistic attitudes prevailing in the League of Nations caused its failure. It was ineffective.
Mazower goes into depth on the political thoughts and actions of Alfred Zimmern whose interests also included Commonwealth ideas which still leaned toward European imperialism. When the United Nations finally came to fruition the controlling old remnants of empire still were prevalent with the Security Council commanding the most power. The five permanent members holding veto power were the main victors of World War II.
Mazower continues his thesis of the death of all European empires with the fall of Nazism as explained in his book "Hitler's Empire: How the Nazis Ruled Europe". The Author explains that politicians from the British Commonwealth wanted to extend the remnants of the old British Empire through the inner workings of the United Nations.
This book is groundbreaking and provides all historians with a much needed eye opener. Mazower explains why the United Nations never did become that utopia it was meant to be. The book shows the Author's expertise and knowledge of 20th Century Europe. No one is better. Mazower is the eminent scholar in this area, bar none. Excellent read offering a new perspective of an area of history not really explored before. 7 Stars!! No Problem!!!

Interesting
By R. Albin
Another interesting book from Mark Mazower. This short book is essentially a set of lectures given by Mazower on origins of the UN. Mazower argues that much discussion of the UN is marred by anachronistic concepts of its founding purposes. Mazower stresses the continuity of the UN with the League of Nations. He highlights also the League's role, as developed by the British and the South African politician Field Marshal Smuts, in maintaining colonial empires. The League framework was apparently driven to a large extent by a perceived need to maintain a strongly racially demarcated world. The League also inherited some preoccupation with international law and within Europe, a role in maintaining minority rights. The UN differed in more explicitly incorporating great power dominance and after the experience of the 30s and WWII, largely abandoned minority rights in favor of emphasizing nation-states and population transfers. There is an interesting discussion of how some Jewish intellectuals, including the anti-genocide activist Raphael Lemkin, fit into this process. In a rather ironic process, as the UN de-emphasized minority rights and exalted national sovereignty, a renewed emphasis on individual human rights emerged as a side-product. In a similar ironic process, the UN emerged as a forum for de-colonialization, this time driven to some extent by conflicts within the former British colonies of South Africa and India. This is far from a systematic work but insightful and a strong reminder of the need to carefully examine the real history of important institutions.

A historical look that the UN's origins
By Sean Meriwether
Manzower traces the origins of the UN Charter signed in 1945 and the ways in which it succeeds, and more often fails, to live up to our expectations for this international organization. Our hindsight view of the UN's original mission might be altruistic, even Utopian, but as the motives of the primary players are revealed we get the unsanitized reality behind the UN's first decades. The charter was a document of its time, drafted as an optimistic response to the devastating aftermath from a second World War. However, it was more or less a continuation of the failed League of Nations, and created to secure the power of the ruling countries and keep imperialism alive and well. The charter's European focus, led by Anglophile Jan Smuts, who dreamed of whites settling and improving Africa, completely--one might say intentionally--ignored the rights of minorities; it was in their best interest to be led by those who knew better. The chapter dealing with the resettlement of displaced European Jews in the Middle East, thus displacing Arabs and causing tensions that remain today, was the most fascinating section in light of current events. Luckily the UN has changed with the times, and though it may not be a perfect organization, the charter did leave the door open for smaller countries with less powerful voices, who have recently become more visible.

A bit myopic and not very thorough
By littleturtle
The authors began their book by contrasting "positivism" with "naturalist-interpretive paradigms", essentially painting an unflattering portrait of quantitatively focused research in an effort to make their interpretive-constructionist approach more appealing to researchers with a social agenda. They also relativized truth to the point that their approach makes benchmarking the data almost impossible. Furthermore they appeared to be hypersensitive to the need to appear credible to critics; it read like a bizarre prep course in politics rather than an overview of best practices in qualitative data collection. I was looking for some solid, grounded methods in qualitative interviewing and felt like I got a bouquet of anecdotes instead. Introduction and Stated Aims of the Book

Having published many books and articles that rely on in-depth, qualitative interviewing, Professors Emeriti Herbert and Irene Rubin (husband and wife) have written a third edition of their book, Qualitative Interviewing: The art of hearing data. This edition had been cited 8,381 times on Google Scholar and 3,359 times on ERIC at the time of this writing. Rubin and Rubin state that with the book, they wanted to share their model of responsive interviewing (hereafter RI), and to share the "exhilaration" they have felt as they used the techniques.

Overview of the Chapters

To help readers appreciate and understand the history from which the authors developed their RI technique, they provide an overview of the various perspectives and approaches in research, giving a history of positivism and its descendants, and compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative paradigms. Chapters 1 and 2 discuss the strengths of in-depth interviewing, highlight differences between it and everyday conversations. They describe how the RI model fits in with the two major social research paradigms (positivism vs. naturalism). In Chapter 3 the authors more thoroughly define RI. It is characterized by a respectful relationship of trust, a supportive tone, flexible design and questions. It accepts the complexity and ambiguity of life, and that researchers' and conversational partners' personalities will influence the interviews. They also discuss naturalistic data-gathering techniques.

Chapters 4 and 5 discuss designing research for quality, using the RI model. Chapters 6 and 7 discusses building and maintaining conversational partnerships. Researchers should begin by examining themselves and their own biases. RI uses and extends skills from quotidian conversations. Chapters 8 through 10 discuss the structure of the RI: main questions, probes, and follow-ups, and what to consider while writing them. The authors describe four patterns of interviews to help researchers balance the RI structure in different scenarios.

In Chapter 11, added for this edition, Rubin and Rubin impart their wisdom regarding coping with interviewing in unusual circumstances (e.g.: cross-cultural, cross-language, and multiparty interviews) and with specialized populations (e.g. technical experts, elites, prisoners, the elderly, and children). Chapter 12 takes readers through the multi-iterative data analysis process, from transcription through coding, sorting, weighing and integrating, generating a theory, and generalizing findings. Chapter 13 discusses sharing the results through various forms of publication. They end the book with their reflections on how working with RI has impacted them, particularly the joy it has brought them.

Strengths and Weaknesses

This book has many strengths, and the one that stands out most is both authors' combined wealth of experience. Readers of this book get access to the combined (and collaborated) wisdom, experience, and advice of two highly respected researchers. Rubin and Rubin frequently illustrate their points with anecdotes from their decades of research. In this way, the authors practice what they preach regarding establishing credibility: they use the data to support the major conclusions, and logically lead the reader to the same conclusion that the authors made. Readers may get qualitative data-gathering experience of their own as they read the collection of anecdotes, in addition to being able to learn directly from Rubin and Rubin's imparted wisdom and advice. The authors mention problems and challenges commonly encountered, and usually follow up immediately with a way to address or ameliorate the problems. Additionally, the authors often offer snippets of dialogue that prospective interviewers might use, such as to make a transition, to broach a touchy subject, or to ask for clarification. These aren't provided to put words in the student's mouth, but to give concrete examples especially where further description about the technique would not be helpful. The lines have presumably worked for Rubin and Rubin, but can be adapted to one's own style and scenario. Perhaps therefore the strengths of the book could be subsumed under one heading: applicable wisdom.

This 256-page volume stands ready for classroom use, complete with references, and indices by author and subject. Important terms are bolded next to their in-text definitions. Its tone in the second person maintains an accessible conversation with the reader. The book is written for novice qualitative researchers, but journalists-in-training could also benefit. Its wealth of advice from two seasoned professionals also makes it noteworthy for experienced researchers who wish to do (more) responsive interviewing in their studies. In the third edition Rubin and Rubin have included even more of their own anecdotes, while still incorporating the existing literature. Those stories, the new Chapter 11, plus the 2012 discussion on computer-assisted qualitative data analysis make the 3rd edition superior to the 2nd.

The book is gender-aware and seems to be gender-balanced, offering both Irene's and Herb's viewpoints on a given topic. One chapter states that women are more likely to give two messages at the same time. Another points out that men and women may think of marriage differently (responsibilities and sexual intimacy vs. emotional support and communication), and therefore should be coded separately.

The book certainly achieved the first of its aims. Rubin and Rubin shared thoroughly detailed information about the RI technique, why to do it, how to go about it, and what to expect. I felt like I vicariously added to my own journalistic interviewing experience. They achieved the second objective, but therein lies my only complaint. They took too long to get to openly sharing the joy of RI. They hinted at it in the Preface, and then the exhilaration got put on hold for the lesson on the history of research paradigms. They waited to open the gates until Chapter 14. I wanted to be sold earlier and more often on the joy of doing RI, so I wish they had included it more strongly during the body. Perhaps it could have been woven into more chapter introductions and/or conclusions. Still, this was a minor drawback. I enjoyed reading the book, and I highly recommend it.

Amazon.com Review
As German armies stampeded through the Soviet Union in the summer of 1941, Nazi politicians and Western statesmen alike predicted the USSR's collapse. In Russia's War, a balanced and acute portrayal of a combat theater that claimed more than 40 million Soviet lives, Richard Overy tells the story of how Stalin and his commanders held off defeat and engineered the most significant military achievement of the Second World War: the destruction of the Wehrmacht.

Russia's War is far from a tale of triumph, as the Russian capacity for resourceful creativity, desperate courage, and raw endurance was matched, if not exceeded, by the brutal oppression of the Soviet system. Overy argues, however, that victory was the result of precisely this uneasy combination. Drawing from extensive archival sources made available in the wake of glasnost, he revises both our conception of the Red Army as a horde that overwhelmed the Germans and the accepted wisdom that Hitler's defeat was the result of strategic bungling and a logistical overreach of the Nazi forces. Perhaps his most poignant contribution is the discussion of the crisis that recent disclosures have provoked in the Russian understanding of the conflict. What was once viewed by the Soviets as the "Great Patriotic War" has become "a crucible of miserable and incomprehensible revelations." In spite of these confusions, Russia's War commences to find significance in a contest that repeatedly disquiets and humbles the historical imagination. --James Highfill

Review
Making excellent use of newly available Presidential archival material and K.G.B. film collections, Overy ... attributes the Soviet victory to the tough Russian spirit, which was hewn by the bitter climate, cruelllly harsh working conditions and Stalin's heinous purges and farm collectivization programs.... Interesting Overview of Russia's Defeat of Nazi War Machine!
By Barron Laycock
I am a confirmed fan of Overy's work, especially after reading his tome on "Why the Allies Won", in which he carefully examines the real reasons the Allies succeeded in a war that was much more closely contested than many observers appreciate. Here he concentrates on what has to be considered the most unlikely reversal of fortune in 20th century war history, the catastrophic yet also heroically successful defense, repulsion, and vanquishing of the Wehrmacht along a war front that was literally thousands of miles long. Against all odds, losing army after army in the prosecution of the war, with millions of combatants and non-combatants killed, woundeded, or captured from the moment of the opening salvos in the summer and fall of 1941, the Russians' capacity for absorbing unrelenting and murderous punishment at the hands of the brutal assaults of a supremely confident and well-equipped Nazi army stunned the world.

By every account Hitler made exactly the right move at the right time; he had just whipped the French and British armies in western Europe without raising a sweat. Just months before the invasion the Russians had been stopped successfully and quite unexpectedly by a much smaller and more poorly equipped Finn army. Thus, no one expected the Russian army to be able to stop or stem the smashing successes of the Germans some 200 divisions strong as they literally flooded through Poland into Russia in Operation Barbarossa, destroying everything in sight.

Yet, with unbelievable determination and equally incomprehensible losses, the Russians eventually began to halt the Wehrmacht advance. Finally, with newly established and quickly trained armies raised even as the Nazis drew near Moscow, Stalin and his armies began the long, tortuous, and painstaking turnaround that eventually helped to save the world. That they did so is without question an accurate summation of the situation. Throughout 1941, 1942, and 1943 the rest of the Allies were simply in no position to seriously challenge Hitler's stranglehold in Europe.

It is clear that without the Soviet prosecution of the war along the Eastern front, an Allied invasion of Europe would have been much more difficult, if not impossible. The war would have been extended by years. Yet the story Overy tells here is not a simple story of unexpected Soviet courage and success in the face of unbelievable odds; it is also a tale that details decades of wanton brutality within Russia itself, a nation hampered by its own trail of wave upon wave of murderous progroms and purges. The antiquated Soviet army was so devastated by the systematic extermination of the upper echelons of the Officer core that almost no one with any combat experience remained in leadership positions by the time the German blitzkreig began.

Under such circumstances, the ability of the Russians to stem the tide of battle and turn it to their advantage becomes a much more interesting and complicated phenomenon to watch and understand. This is a carefully crafted and well-documented narrative that deserves your studious attention. For any serious student of the second world war, this book is a must-read. Enjoy!

Balanced and readable account of the Soviet WWII experience
By A Customer
Richard Overy is a professor of modern history at King's College, London. His "Russia's War" is to my (limited) knowledge the first account of the second world war from a Soviet perspecive after the opening of Russian archives. The book is notable for three reasons:
1. Overy's history finely balances detail and overview. He neither clutters the story with endless tales of carnage and missery nor is the brutal horror, unleashed by the Nazi aggressors as well as the Soviets' own regime, missing from the book. On the strategic level, Richard Overy manages to make the reader grasp the few really decisive campaigns in this long and complicated conflict.
2. The key Soviet players come to live. It's not just Stalin (on whom he offers insights, which were new to me) or Georgi Zhukov but also the second tier of national and military leaders. The human side of the Soviet key players and the psychological climate in the Soviet Union comes back to life. He shows what Stalin, Zhukov and the others did to reverse the odds within 18 months.
3. The book doesn't start on 22 June, 1941 and ends on 9 May, 1945. Richard Overy devotes a substantial part of the book to the civil war and the period leading up to the war in Europe. He dicusses to early problems of the regime in the Soviet Union, the foreign aggression against them (e.g. Poland's invasion of Soviet territory in 1920) and the terror of the Stalinist regime before the war which consumed the lives of many millions of Russians, Ukrainians and other nationalities. Also, he describes the immediate period after the war, when Ukrainian rebels continued a bloody campaign into the Fifties.
Last but not least I would like to mention the moderate price. It's imperative reading for the professional historian as well as anybody interested in the subject. Very recommendable indeed!

Highly uneven
By A Customer
One can't help but compare this book with David Glantz's and Jonathan House's "When Titans Clashed". Both of these works are fairly new, based on newly available material, and attepmpt to capture the Soviet experience in WW2 in one volume (which is hopeless, the conflict was too large for that). The main difference is that where Glantz's book focuses on the military aspects, Overy spends more time on the political and human side of the story.
Apparently, Overy did not spend any time in the archives. You will not find any documents or references to them in this book. It's based mostly on secondary sources. The entire narrative seems to rely too much on various memoirs and biographies, which makes the point of view rather skewed in favor of those players whose memoirs Overy had read.
The resulting quality of the work is uneven. Overy does use new research extensively and dispels many myths. For example, Soviet casualty figures and the number of GULAG's prisoners come from reliable sources based on declassified archival data. On the other hand, Overy puts too much stock in works of dubious revisionists like Boris Sokolov, who provided an alternative view on Soviet casualties and significance of Lend Lease. Where Overy's sources pre-date the opening of Russian archives, old incorrect stereotypes abound.
The books is full of minor and not so minor errors. At first glance it seems there is a mistake every 3-4 pages. For example, Overy claimed that the main attack in Op. Bagration was to come from the 2nd and 3rd Belorussian fronts, when in fact the main blow was delivered by the 1st Belorussian front. There are numerous other military mistakes. There are also many errors related to politics. For some reason he assumed that there was no Soviet partisan movement in Ukraine because the nationalist partisans did not let them penetrate (p. 150). In fact, nationalist guerillas controlled only a small portion of the Western Ukraine, the rest was controlled by Soviet partisans. Then there is also a matter of him consistently calling Lvov a Polish city -- I don't think Ukrainians will appreciate that.
Overy also allows himself to theorize about the differences between Russian and Western societies. His conclusions are too simplistic.
Other minor details: Maps are too few and with some errors. Photos are of low quality (too dark) and with errors in their captions (e.g. a procession of supposed Ukrainians with a banner written in Belorussian). Many Russian last names are misspelled.
In short, if you're interested in military aspects of history, this book is not for you. "When Titans Clashed" is a lot better than this. I'm giving it 3 stars only because it does contain some new and valuable information not available to regular readers of military periodicals.

A Chronology of the Bible: Challenge to the Standard Version, by Yosef Ben-Jochannan

A chronology of the Bible (first published in 1972) is perhaps his most popular work. Originally prepared at the request of a group of Harlem-based ministers, Chronology documents the African origins of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Dr. Ben traces significant influences, developments, and people that have shaped and provided the foundation for the holy books used in these religions.

Need to know information. When I showed this book to a pastor, he didn't take it serious; glanced at it and said no matter what, until you accept Christianity you will continue to remain in the dark. SPEECHLESS for a minute. My reply; sorry to be a conscious person.

Fraktur Mon Amour, by Judith Schalansky

When was the last time a book on typography made you swoon? Just wait until you feast your eyes on Fraktur MonAmour, Berlin-based graphic designer Judith Schalansky's love letter to Blackletter fonts. Blackletter, also known asFraktur or Gothic type, was commonly used throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. By the end of the Renaissance it had mostly been replaced by the typeface Latin Antiqua. The use of Blackletter type became taboo in Germany after World War II because it was incorrectly associated with the Nazis, who actually banned its use in 1941 because it was falsely believed to be a Jewish invention. Revelations about the true history and meaning of Blackletter type have resultedin a resurgence in usage by graphic designers. Companies such as Nike, Reebok, and Coca-Cola now use Fraktur intheir advertising. It decorates posters, album covers, and even skin in the form of tattoos. But a comprehensive collectionof the most beautiful classic faces, as well as the best new variations, has been missing until now.

Fraktur Mon Amour reproduces 300 variations of Blackletter fonts, ranging from historical fonts to contemporary reinventions, in a sensuous, beautifully crafted, hot-pink prayer book-style catalog that is destined to become a fetish object for designers and type enthusiasts. Each Blackletter font is presented on a full page along with its complete alphabet, date of origin, the name of its designer, and its original foundry. On the facing page is a composition created fromthat font that explores the subversive beauty of this unique typeface. In addition, 137 of these fonts—including fourcreated exclusively for this book—are collected on an enclosed CD (Mac and PC) for free private and restricted commercial use. Fraktur Mon Amour is the winner of several awards, including the Type Directors Club of New York's 2007 Award for Typographic Excellence.

Review
In Blackletter, "Blackletters association with Nazi propaganda cast the type style as the black sheep of typography. But more and more brands are using the style as a way to bring an edgy vibe to their products." -- Sean Ashcroft --How Design:

"I'm happy to confess my weakness for beautiful books like the new love letter to Blackletter typography "Fraktur Mon Amour"though I have to admit it had been some time since I came across one that stopped me in my tracks like this one did. Berlin-based designer Judith Schalansky's presentation of the typeface collection is almost more compelling than the fonts themselves. Bound like a King James Bible for font geeks and printed in contrasting black, white and shocking pink, it makes for a book that's as much a gorgeous object as it is a handy and inspiring resource." -- Brian Fichtner --Cool Hunting Blog, November 7, 2008

"Fraktur Mon Amour is essentially a compendium of currently available digital blackletter fonts (expanded to cover 333 of them) preceded by a few words by Schalansky and supplemented by a CD of 150 free fonts. Since its initial publication in 2006, it has been a raging success. The design, which deliberately thumbs its nose at the standard image of blackletter, is a key factor in that success. The book looks like a Bible with its squat proportions and placemarker ribbons except that its title and its page edges are in hot pink. Although not a shade I like, its choice as a second colour was a brilliant decision. It not only yanks blackletter out of its medieval and unfortunate political associations, but it also signals that blackletter is not inherently masculine or even black. The fonts in Fraktur Mon Amour are a mix of the excellent, the important and the trivial. But this is surely one part of its popularity. Schalansky has brought blackletter to the people. The book is a bold and welcome addition to the sparse literature on blackletter" -- Paul Shaw --Eye Magazine, Spring, 2009

If you love letters even half as much as I do, you need this.

My friend: "I can make copies of a few of your favorite pages, if you want."
Me: "You'll be making copies for the rest of your natural life. I'll just buy my own."

This is a giant, delightful tome full of what feels like every version of blackletter known to mankind.

Calligraphy practice tip: I often scan and print out increased-size versions of these pages and trace them for lettering practice. Tracing! What blasphemy! Actually, plenty of artists trace—its a great way to learn muscle memory and consistency. Just don't try to pass it off as your own original work, okay?

STELLAR
By BeForSure
I first saw this book at a graphic art store. I pulled it off the shelf because it looked so mysterious, like a very thick old bible. At the time, I did not have the funds to purchase it. I waited patiently and then saw it was on Amazon and I ordered it straight away. I will never regret getting this book. It has been so well laid out, the colors, the style, the mood, it is truly exceptional work. Just flipping through it I have learned so much about layout/pattern design, as a letter from each font has been used to create a graphic on the left, and the full font is displayed on the right. I had no problems seeing the mood of the fonts whatsoever, besides, the book comes with a CD so you can easily see the fonts on your computer. I have already shared this book with several others who were also impressed by the magnitude of fonts and the work that must have gone into the research alone. There was much love put into the creation of this book, and it shows!

What a screamingly cool book!
By James Sanderson
Interesting essays, a wonderful selection of typefaces, almost half of which are on the enclosed CD, and two sewn in bookmarks in the signature colors - what's not to love? This is a really fun resource for graphic design artists as well as calligraphers. In addition to some fairly out-there fonts, there are a number of truly classic one, including the typefaces used by J Gutenberg and Wm Morris. Many thanks to all concerned!
