The Zen Commandments: Ten Suggestions for a Life of Inner Freedom, by Dean Sluyter

The Ten Commandments tell us how to behave, but they don't say much about the inner awareness from which outer behavior springs. Do the right thing, of course-- but better yet, find your inner light and doing the right thing becomes as natural as breathing. THE ZEN COMMANDMENTS offers ten powerful nudges toward that light.

Drawing on sources from Zen stories and the Bible to jazz and rock 'n' roll, from American movies to Tibetan meditative techniques, Dean Sluyter steers clear of dogma and emphasizes what works-- a sort of spiritual street smarts. He shows that the state of boundless freedom and happiness isn't something distant or exotic, but is right here, while you're stuck in traffic or taking out the trash. And revisiting the Ten Commandments, he shows how on a deeper level they offer some surprising enlightenment wisdom of their own.

“The book is extremely well written and joyously entertaining.”
—Publishers Weekly

“With sparkling clarity and wit, Sluyter's ten suggestions lay out the practical essentials of the path. My suggestion is: listen to this guy.”
—Lama Surya Das, author of Awakening the Buddha Within

“Dean Sluyter clearly presents simple but profound ways to live one's life consciously and skillfully. He teaches that the source of universal truth not only rests in the heart of every one of us, but is the essence of what ultimately brings us true happiness and freedom. This is a wonderful book with rich wisdom and deep insight.”
—Rabbi David Cooper, author of God Is a Verb

“No matter what your religion (or lack of it), this book shows how to live the kind of life people ache for. It turns out to be pretty simple.”

Amazon.com Review
In Dean Sluyter's clever The Zen Commandments, the author lays down 10 guidelines for living a more present life and experiencing moment-to-moment awareness. Some of his "commandments" are Zen interpretations of the 10 laws Moses brought down from Mount Sinai; others have nothing to do with the prophet's inscribed tablets. In one example, Sluyter takes the Fourth Commandment--Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy--and gives it a Zen twist: The whole idea of Sabbath is a temporary withdrawal from limited worldly activities in order to connect to the limitlessness that some people call God. Here ... we're learning to be in a state of utter rest seven days a week, 60 seconds a minute, transcending and silently witnessing all physical and mental activities, even while performing them."

Through the moment-to-moment awareness that Zen demands, we constantly stay in touch with God, or the Infinite (or whatever individuals choose to call it), Sluyter reminds us. Other Zen commandments are more contemporary and have nothing to do with biblical precepts. Perhaps one of his most useful guidelines is his enjoinder to "Notice the Moment": On our journey through life, we think of the time we spent walking down the hall from Office A to Office B as intermission, dead time, mere connective tissue. But there is no intermission. The show never stops. Every moment is the only moment. Sluyter sprinkles his chapters with eclectic quotes from Bob Dylan, Indian gurus, Miles Davis, Franz Kafka, even Bill Clinton. This is a lively book and one that will almost certainly give you pause in your day, whether it's to simply stop and take a breath while rushing through your morning routine, or to notice the roadside flowers while stalled in rush-hour traffic. --Demian McLean

From Publishers Weekly
Meditation teacher Sluyter (Why the Chicken Crossed the Road and Other Hidden Enlightenment Teachings) draws 10 life "suggestions" from the world's religions, scriptures, philosophers, literature and popular culture (in his words, "any tradition that promotes compassionate outer behavior and enlightened inner awareness"). Sluyter's suggestions involve acting with kindness, noticing the moment, keeping things simple, blessing others and remaining devoted. His sources include Jesus and the Dalai Lama, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Bob Dylan, Monty Python and Ramana Maharshi, the Wizard of Oz and the Prajnaparamita Sutra. The strength of this eclecticism is that the book is extremely well written and joyously entertaining; its weakness is that in finding the commonalties among so many different perspectives, Sluyter omits much of the background that makes those perspectives uniquely true. This approach may be downright jarring to someone who regards a particular belief system seriously. Sluyter's point--that we often make life too complex when we really need to just relax and be--is a simple one, as are pithy maxims such as "No Appointment, No Disappointment." For those who find simplicity hard to attain, his chapters also include exercises in meditation. The book enthusiastically suggests that readers experiment and adhere to anything that works for them "as if your life depended on it," because, according to Sluyter, it actually does.

Simple is Wonderful
By Praveen Puri
Just like much of our lives, we over complicate the search for happiness, meaning, and spirituality.

Sluyter encourages us to relax, be light-hearted, and realize that the answers lie in simply living our regular lives, but being fully engaged in them.

My own life changed drastically from the inside out when I simply started spending a minute here and there to just completely concentrate on what I am doing in the present moment.

For example, I may be walking, and then I'll concentrate on just walking, and saying to myself "I'm stepping...". I don't do this all the time, just when the thought strikes me. As this becomes a habit, this "descending into the present moment" will feel like a cloak of happiness around you.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dean in my Aikido dojo. He is truly a disciple of his own teachings. He draws people to him through his effortless style and cheerfullness. I since purchased the The Zen Commandments and have read and reread it. It is a very easy read, but with profound yet simple advise on how to enjoy life. I highly recommend this book to any one.

The Arthurian Name Dictionary (Garland Reference Library of the Humanities)From Brand: Routledge

This text presents a comprehensive dictionary of characters, places, objects and themes found in the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Information is drawn from significant Arthurian sources between Gildas's "De Excidio Britanniae" (c.540) and Tennyson's 19th-century "Idylls of the King". The book contains names extracted from over 250 original Arthurian texts and includes information on characters such as Lancelot and Gawain, places such as Camelot and Camlann, objects such as Excalibur and the Holy Grail and themes such as the Sword in the Stone and the beheading game. Each entry provides a description of the name, including possible origins or historical basis of the name, and major characters and themes are discussed extensively and their evolution through the series of texts is traced.

From Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-Serious students of the Arthurian legends will find this a useful and informative resource. More than 5000 alphabetical entries include the people, places, items, and themes found in Arthurian literature written between the 6th and 19th centuries. The text goes beyond simple definitions, incorporating background on how individuals fit into a particular legend and/or their evolution as characters in the stories. Significant figures such as Guinevere and Merlin warrant several pages. While alternate spellings or names follow the main entries, they are not cross-referenced and there is no name index. A "Source Index" consists of an annotated listing of the hundreds of resources from which the editor drew his material. While some readers may find more detail here than they want, enthusiasts will find that they have tapped into a wellspring of information.

From Booklist
The legend of King Arthur and his knights and ladies has been around for more than a millennium. It probably began in the Dark Ages in Wales, as oral tales passed down through the years. Then it was picked up by the English, transmitted to Europe, and returned to England to be codified by Sir Thomas Malory. Meanwhile, Arthur had found a new best friend (Lancelot), a quest (the Holy Grail), and a place to live (Camelot). The Arthurian legend is best described as an amalgam of many writers' ideas, plots, themes, characters, and motifs.

To comb through 1,500 years of Arthuriana and find every name associated with it is a considerable task that Bruce has accomplished admirably. The extremely invaluable New Arthurian Encyclopedia (Garland, 1996) provides only 90 names (by design, it should be noted), whereas this volume has more than 5,600. It makes for both a fascinating read and a very useful reference tool. The work consists mostly of names of major and minor characters (Arthur, Gwythyr, Tristan, Petipace of Winchelsea), but there are also references to places, events, and things. The author has wisely made his cutoff with Tennyson's The Idylls of the King (1859^-1886) or the volume would be twice as long because of the current proliferation of Arthuriana. Each entry is listed alphabetically and depending on the subject can be very short or quite long. The entry on Arthur is nine pages long. It looks first at his historicity and how the legend around him developed. Then it notes what the texts say about the dates of his reign, how they portray his character, what insignia he carried, and where his grave is located. Entries are fully cross-referenced with the excellent appendix on sources that lists not only author, title, and date but provides brief descriptions, some keywords, and a note on the text that was used. This is a very useful work that most large public and academic libraries should have.

Review
...extremely invaluable...a fascinating read and a very useful reference tool...that most large and public libraries should have.
–Reference Books Bulletin

Serious students of the Arthurian legends will find this a useful and informative resource.
–School Library Journal

...a valuable tool for study and enjoyment of an already-essential myth of our cilivization and greatly to be recommended to individual readers and libraries alike..
–Arthuriana, January 2000

An excellent companion to The New Arthurian Encyclopedia.... It includes all the characters and places; for the major Arthurian texts, the work is comprehensive.
–Booklist/RBB, June 1 & 15, 2004

Even experienced students of Arthurian literature will find plenty of new discoveries in Bruce's dictionary. Here the unbelievably wide world of Arthurian romance that William Caxton marveled at in 1483 is itemized in fascinating, specific detail. The book should be a gold mine for future Arthurian novelists as well as treasure for the inquisitive scholar.
–Jennifer R. Goodman, Texas A&M University, Speculum, April 2003

Bravo from Green Knight Publishing!
By Peter Corless
Christopher Bruce's encyclopaedic work is a magnificent compendium of all of the major 6th to 19th century Arthurian sources.
As a publisher of books and games based on the original Arthurian sources, I have turned to this book not as my 'Bible', but as a sort of 'Bible Concordance'. Which stories can I find Percival (or his many alternative names) occurring in?
I found this book to be worth ten, if not a hundred times its cover price in terms of compiling years of research into a single treasury of Arthurian knowledge.

As an avid Arthurian reader, I am amazed at the completeness of this wonderful reference. Nowhere have I ever seen such a valid and thorough resource. My son has loaned me his copy but I am looking forward to adding one of my own to my library. It is hard to believe that anyone could compile such a great volume so masterfully! Bravo, Mr. Bruce!

A masterful melding of medieval lore!

I was amazed to discover how young this first time author is. He has produced a profoundly complete and thoroughly researched scholarly work that is a "must read" for any student of the Aurthurian Legends. Mr. Bruce has researched even the most obscure references and stories of Arthur and the other characters associated with the legend. Thank you for your excellent work.

The Greeks at War: From Athens to Alexander (Essential Histories Specials), by Philip de Souza, Waldemar Heckel, Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones, Vi

Inspiring generations of poets, novelists, scriptwriters and scholars, the rise and fall of the great Empires of the Classical world is an enthralling story of passion and conquest. The leaders, battles and military technologies that dominated the wars between Greece and Persia, and Alexander's conquests are all examined in detail in this book, and their historical significance is discussed. The appendix focuses on the modern treatment of Ancient Greece in film, including behind-the-scenes insights into the filming of battle scenes for Oliver Stone's epic movie, Alexander. This volume combines material previously published as Essential Histories 36, 27 and 26, with a new foreword by renowned historian and author Victor Davis Hanson, and new material on the Wars of the Successors.

learn alot in a little amount of time
By Leonidas the Spartan
I guess the clich "a picture is worth a thousand words" is over used. Therefore I will not demean myself by utilizing it. However this book uses phase-by-phase maps to show the progression of a battle. Therefore what might take an hour to understand 20 pages on Gaugamela takes 5 minutes looking at a map. This book also has drawing of dwelling of the various Greek cities and encompasses the culture of the time period. After all, the important thing about the Greeks is the lifestyle of freedom. And the preservation of that freedom is what made the Greco-Persian Wars so important. The book covers the Greco-Persian Wars, Peloponnesian War and Alexander. The only downside is that there are a few gaps that aren't covered. However for the average reader may not want to take the time to read about the minor wars. I have read quite a few books on the Greeks and I think that people like J.F.C. Fuller and Arrian do an excellent job describing Alexander, but this book makes an excellent compliment. Therefore, I recommend this book to amateur and experienced reader.

Review of EHS 'Greeks at War'
By Ryan Mease
This book presents an excellent introduction to the Persian, Peloponnesian, various post-Peloponnesian and Macedonian wars. Further, it is supplemented by occasional biopics of soldiers from each of these eras and cultural considerations as well. The writing is very easy to read, and the work is filled with full-collor photographs to supplement learning, as well as roughly a dozen maps showing the interplay of armies during historical battles. There are quotes from ancient historians, with a greater presence of direct quotations in the section on Alexander.

Good Succinct Introductions to the Greco-Persian and Peloponnesian Wars & Alexander the Great's Campaigns
By Yoda
This book is a compilation of 3 of Osprey Publishing Press previously published short 90 page short books in their "Essential Histories" series. Each of the 3 books makes up one chapter of this volume. The only addition to the 3 books is a 2 page introduction by the Classical Scholar Victor Hansen that, unfortunately, really does not add anything of substance.

Due to the short length of each of the books contained therein (about 90 pages of which half illustration), a potential reader should not expect to obtain an in-depth analysis or history of each of the topics but instead only a very succinct overview. In this the three chapters due succeed. In about 3-4 hours of reading the reader gets an idea regarding the historical contexts the wars occurred in. The powers discussed, leaders, armed forces are briefly discussed as well as how the wars drew themselves out and finally, what the consequences of the wars were (with respect to the last all 3 chapters are quite weak). Considering the length of the wars, for example the Peloponnesian War lasted 27 years, this is no small feat. In addition, the book is well illustrated with both strategic and tactical maps as well as photos and illustrations based on contemporary statues, coins, etc. showing troops and their armaments, leaders, etc.

All and all a fairly good introduction to these wars for those who have only about 4 hours to get up to speed.

How to Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People): Spiritual Advice for Modern Relationships, by Meggan Watterson, Lodro Rinzler

Are you trying to find love – and beginning to suspect you’re not looking in the right place? This wise, hip guide gives you a new map for the journey to happiness in relationships of all kinds, starting in your own heart.

Told from the alternating vantage points of authors Meggan Watterson and Lodro Rinzler, How to Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People) reminds us that love isn’t something we have to earn. All of us are deeply and intrinsically worthy of love – not only the love we hope to receive from others, but the love we give to ourselves – and this book offers the insight and practical tools we need to stay firmly grounded in self-love as we ride out the natural (and often stormy) cycles of relationships.

Meggan and Lodro’s unique perspectives as teachers and scholars of Christian mysticism and Buddhism respectively make for a rich and lively dialogue that draws on wisdom sources like the Gospel of Mary Magdalene and the Four Noble Truths, along with funny, revealing stories from their own love lives and their deep friendship with each other. You’ll find guidance for embracing single life, dating with an open heart, and thriving in lasting love; meditations and practices for calm abiding, “disciplined hope,” and connecting to the source of love within you; and tips on everything from sex, self-worth, and nourishing friendships to navigating breakups and learning to truly love yourself. Ultimately, you’ll be able to see your ideal partner in a new light – not as someone who “completes” you, but as someone who mirrors back to you your own wholeness.

Review
“How to Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People) is a modern-day guide to all things relationship— starting with numero uno—yourself. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like more love in their life. And last time I checked that was everyone on the planet.”

— Christiane Northrup, M.D., New York Times best-selling author of Goddesses Never Age

“How to Love Yourselfis one of the best books I’ve read on the topic of relationships. This book translates life-changing spiritual principles in a hip and relevant way. Meggan and Lodro offer the most treasured gift; a pathway to learn to love yourself no matter what. I recommend this book to anyone ready to give, receive, and embody love.”

— Gabrielle Bernstein,New York Timesbest-selling author ofMiracles Now

“This is a new kind of self-help book. There is no perfection and pontificating here—just the beautiful, messy, and wonderful truth about love, shared with great generosity. While both authors are deeply steeped in their mutual wisdom traditions, their greatest teachings are in the personal stories they share. No matter what is (or isn’t) happening in your life, Lodro and Meggan help you to see that your whole life is your love life.”

— Susan Piver, New York Times best-selling author of The Wisdom of a Broken Heart and Start Here Now

“How to Love Yourself is an illuminating look at love—a quality hard to figure out even as we are taught that it makes the world go ‘round. The book is wise, useful, and also great fun to read. Lodro, from his long-term Buddhist practice, and Meggan, with her Christian mystic background, offer different ways of viewing love as the force that frees us to truly be ourselves, and be happy.”

— Sharon Salzberg, author of Lovingkindness and Real Happiness

“The great thing about Lodro and Meggan writing a book about love is that you get perspectives from both a down-to-earth Buddhist dude, and a hot female mystic—AND!—double the jokes and love stories. The result is a lot of truth and modern wisdom on how to expand your capacity to love—in suffering, in sex, in separation, in spirit, in your very real life that could always be filled with more love.”

— Danielle LaPorte, New York Times best-selling author ofThe Desire MapandThe Fire Starter Sessions

“I so wish I had read this book when I was 18 and just starting out in the dating world. It would have saved me a lot of trouble and a boatload of Kleenex. Meggan and Lodro are not only totally sane in their approach to relationships, they’re also practical and hilarious. This page-turner will most assuredly crack you up, but more importantly, it will ease your path to finding the love of your life, whether that turns out to be someone else or the person staring back at you when you look in the mirror.”

— Kate Northrup, best-selling author of Money, A Love Story

“I am so grateful the universe shifted and brought both Meggan and Lodro together to share this sacred work. Loving yourself is no easy task but it’s the most rewarding lesson. How To Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People) is a manual that helps you dive deep into the cave of your own heart so you can become your own beloved. This step-by-step guide helps you crack open the most auspicious part of you so that you can walk safely in love. If you are ready to courageously leap out of fear and into unconditional love, this is the book for you.”

— Kyle Gray, best-selling author of Angel Prayers

“Meggan Watterson and Lodro Rinzler have written a modern-day spiritual ‘he said, she said’ as they guide us along the path to loving ourselves fiercely, ultimately giving way to loving others and being loved. Intimate, entertaining, provocative, and revealing,How To Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People)is forall seekers of self-love and self-acceptance. Give your heart a gift and immerse yourself in the wisdom and lessons this book has to offer—you just may find love where you least expect it.”

— Nancy Levin, best-selling author ofJump . . . And Your Life Will Appear

“How To Love Yourself (And Sometimes Other People) has real modern gems in it, and the down-to-earth and complementary voices of its authors, Meggan and Lodro—both young experts in their own spiritual fields—leaves you feeling like they are totally present with you as you read these pages. What really helps us to navigate love is a good conversation with trusted friends, friends who don’t judge us, friends who actually know what they are talking about. Meggan and Lodro both show their ability to be those friends, to themselves, to each other, and to us as we read along.”

— Ethan Nichtern, author of The Road Home

“Looking for love? Well, stop. Seriously, the search is over. Meggan and Lodro remind us that love is right here, within. There’s nowhere we need to go or some better version of ourself we need to become. How To Love Yourself is that slap to the forehead that we all can use. This beautiful gem reminds us that we are love and therefore we don’t need to wait for a partner to find love. We can get that party started right now––and then a partner can swing in and join us on this wild adventure of loving ourselves. No stress. No expectations. Just love.”

Highly recommended if you want to strengthen love
By David Mynchenberg
Who wouldn't benefit from hearing about how to love themselves? I love this book. Simply put. I'm recently going through a break up and it has comforted my soul. It's like a conversation with each of the authors; one author shares their piece of each chapter's subject, like how to love being single, and then the other author shares their experience and nugget of understanding. The only thing I do not like about it is the chapters relatively short and I'd love to hear more of what these authors think-however I could read their other books if I want more. Both are amazing people who are easy for me, a 29 year old male, to relate with.

perfect timing
By Jessica Creech
This is just the spiritual dating advice I needed at just the right time! Both authors translate Buddhism and Christian mysticism into simple practices to enrich your relationship with your highest self so that you might flourish more freely in the world with others. I have been deeply inspired by Watterson's work for years and I love this book concept, style and delivery. When I was finished I had clear action plans for cultivating a better relationship with myself and how to practice healthier boundaries, non-attachment, and better loving kindness with others.

wonderful
By Nathalie Desjacques
I highly recommend this book. I read the first chapter on an Italian train, on my way to spend one day in Venice on my own with a broken heart, feeling curious and a bit anxious at the same time about such an experience. I spent one of the most beautiful day of my life... there is magic in this book, good, simple magic that makes you connect to unconditional love.

Warning BarbarianSpy Xtreme: contains graphic double penetration as well as some non graphic violence and initial reluctance.

For a seeker of stories featuring one of the most extreme gay male fetishes, double anal penetration, the hunt is often a frustrating one that requires extensive research for sometimes only tertiary satisfaction. That hunt is over. This anthology provides twenty-five stories by the prolific erotica author habu that each include at least one lesser or large scene of what you are looking for when you are in just “that” mood. These works run the gamut from being centered on men seeking that particular sexual coupling, like “Doubling Bets” and “The Exchange Students,” to excerpts of scenes including that sexual act from habu’s many previously published works. There is no need to search extensively for just a hint of a mention here and there—this anthology centers on this specific fetish, from the romantic to the exotic to the reluctant and dominated.

So, if you are so inclined, get comfortable, open up Doubled and prepare to double your pleasure. There is nowhere else you are going to find a collection as extensive and as focused on this particular theme.

This is a BarbarianSpy relaunch of the 2010 eXcessica anthology by the same name.
For habu’s double penetration stories written since 2010, see the follow-up anthology, Doubled Again, also available from BarbarianSpy in conjunction with this relaunch.

Good Story

This anthology has many stories, each by the same author, but they all manage to all be different while featuring the title sex act. I enjoyed this enough that I have already bought another book by the same author.
