Artistic Talent, Propaganda and Fate

While a few of the paintings in this book have supposedly beenproven to be forgeries, the majority have been proven to have been thework of Adolf Hitler. Billy Price, the author, has also stated that after the book was printed, he was contacted by several people who posessed verifiable paintings of equal quality.
This book has not one word of praise for Adolf Hitler nor any of his artwork. It is simply a listing of the art works in known existence. Yet, the first printing, which is a German language version, was confiscated by the German government. This book, which is the English language version, is actually the second printing.
During World War Two, the German propaganda machine generated many lies about our leaders. Churchill and Roosevelt were the butts of many jokes in Germany. We, the Allies, claimed that Hilter was a "house painter." Indeed, his favorite subjects were buildings. Therefore, we only lied a little.
When Hitler had applied to the art school in Vienna, he was turned down. They did recommend that he become an architect since he enjoyed painting buildings. Unfortunately, he had dropped out of school when his father had died and was not qualified for entry into architect's school. So, he went into politics instead. Imagine how different the history of the twentieth century would have been had they accepted him into the art school.
Over all, I rate this book very highly. How can anyone understand the personality behind the Adolf Hitler myth without seeing his artwork. END

Who can speculate as to what might have been.......

As I read through this book and looked at the recreations of Hitler's artwork, I can't help but wonder what might have been averted had the snot-nosed, elitist, STUPID instructors admitted him to the Art school that he applied to, at least to have given him the chance to prove himself as an artist. Whatever you think of him, he was a gifted artist; maybe not a Michaelangelo or Gogan, but with training and encouragement, instead of the ridicule he got, possibly he would have gone on to become a commercial artist, and six million lives might never have been lost; not to mention a war that might never have happened. Think about it, and get this book, if you can.

Honest Look at one aspect of Der Fuhrer

More than 50 years after the death and destruction attributable to Adolph Hitler, the mere mention of his name still brings out strong emotions in most people. While his politics deserve the severe criticism most people feel, it is fair to isolate portions of his life for study and to let opinions on those areas be based on their own merits (or lack of), and that is exactly what this book does as it relates to Hitler's artist talents and interests.
Not only does this book refrain from discussing any other aspects of Hitler's life and activities, but it also does not take sides regarding the talent or value of his drawings and paintings. It quotes the opinions of others, both praises and criticisms, but the author does not share any personal opinions he may have formed as a result of compiling the book. He even states that he will only report historical facts and will leave all judgements to the readers.
The book starts with the history of a young Adolph trying to earn a living as a painter and vowing to become a famous artist. It traces his artist interests from youth to rejection by artist school, through his continued interests as he shifts to becoming a writer then politician. Once in power in Germany it discusses his efforts to gather, document, and preserve his earlier artwork as "national treasures." It also discusses the evolution of interest in his work since the war, including forgeries and authentications.
All the above takes place in the first few pages of the book. The remainder simply shows examples of his work, along with titles, dates, and any other known relevant facts.
Any collector will tell you that the most valuable of any sort of collectable will be subject to forgeries, indeed few collections of any size exist that do not contain some undetected or questionable items. This fact should not be used to invalidate the existence of authentic pieces or the value of reference materials which seek to help the collector become more knowledgeable about their hobby.
It is hard to imagine how this author could have been more thorough or more fair with the treatment of this particular topic. This book is easily the best single reference source for those interested in the history of Hitler art and the variety of forms it took. Highest recommendations, without any reservations.

About the Author
Dave Hanson is best know for playing "Jack," one of the unforgettable Hanson Brothers in the movie Slap Shot, but he also enjoyed a memorable hockey career that spanned 10 seasons and included stints with three World Hockey Association teams and the NHL's Detroit Red Wings and Minnesota North Stars. Today, he manages the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, where he lives with his wife, Sue (who also appeared in Slap Shot), daughters, Erin and Sara, and son, Christian. Dave also continues to make regular promotional appearances around the country with his fellow Hanson Brothers, Steve and Jeff Carlson.

Ross Bernstein is the best-selling author of more than 40 sports books. His work has been featured on CNN and ESPN, and in the Wall Street Journal and USA Today. A very fun read for any sports fan

First off let me say I am not a big hockey fan, but I am a big fan of the movie Slap Shot and a sports fan in general. This was an absolute delight to read. Like another reviewer said, it's not fine literature, but it is as well written, insightful and funny as any sports biography I have read. On the Amazon scale, five starts means you love it and love it I did.

I found out lots of interesting things about Dave Hanson and the Carlson Brothers (who rounded out the famous onscreen Hanson Brothers). I also learned a great deal about minor league and professional hockey. It has also renewed my interest in trying again to follow hockey. When the next season kicks off, I have my Charlestown Chiefs authentic home jersey, foil and thick framed "Clark Kent" glasses at the ready.

If you have ever played organized sports or followed team sports closely, you will get a kick out of this book learning about the antics behind the scenes of professional hockey in the 1970s and how the misfits made out on the set of Slap Shot. Long live Dave Hanson, Jeff and Steve Carlson and "Old Time Hockey."

"Most criminals start out as folk heroes"

The book is pretty good with a lot of laughs. The story revolves more around him than the movie, but there is a lot about the movie intertwined throughout the book. If you are a fan of the movie I would definitely pick this up. If you are a fan of hockey, especially the daily grind of playing, this is also a great book that explains a great deal about what it takes to make it when you aren't gifted enought to be handed an NHL roster spot. The sacrifices he had to make, but especially the sacrifices his family and loved ones had to make for him to follow his dream.

There are plenty of anecdotes and name-dropping that will surprise you. Here's a taste...did you know Paul Stewart (yes the ref) was a tough guy in the minors? I don't want to spoil anything. "Killer," if you're reeading this, thanks for the effort, I'm very happy I picked up your book. It was very hard to put down. It cost me a few 3 hr sleep nights, but it was so worth it. When you talked about trying out at the Wakota Arena in South St Paul, I told my girlfriend, "Hey, I tried out for a junior team there!" (South St. Paul Steers) It was pretty cool.

He Really is a Legend

Lots of good hockey stories...but what keeps this from getting 5 stars is that some of the same stories are repeated in the book...once from Dave Hanson's point of view...then from someone elses point of view and it would be OKAY if it gave additional insight but in my opinion they state the exact same view...and having 20 people telling me that Dave is a great Father , Husband , teammate and all around guy is not necessary . He does set a great example of hard work and faith and love . I am often at the sport complex where Dave manages and have seen him on several occasions and to look at him...you would never know him as an enforcer...and I will say what all 20 others in the book said...Dave's a really good guy

Excellent new SAT Math Workbook

I have three Math workbooks for the new SAT 2016 and this is easily the best. Very precisely written, it feels almost like a dictionary/bible for the Math sections. The lesson materials are broken down and presented in a question and answer format which is very very helpful for tutors to make sure their students understand key concepts. The new topics of Data Collection(population and sample), Trigonometry, Complex Numbers, and Radians are covered in detail. There is a lesson on extended thinking that discusses problem solving strategies which alone makes this workbook a must-have. Detailed answers appear immediately at the end of each lesson which is very convenient.

This workbook is very comprehensive and captures the flavor of the new SAT Math section in depth and difficulty level. I have looked at several other workbooks - most of them are either a rehash of the old SAT or hastily put together. This workbook is perfectly aligned with the test specifications. A must-have for anyone taking the new SAT.

Masquerading As the real stuff

Acquired this book from a friend. Found it lacking. Author appears to have taken liberties with material that has not yet been finalized by College Board. I would stick with official material made available by College Board on Khan Academy. Various studies have shown that material from the test writers is best suited and impossible to replicate

Superb first hand account of submarine service

First off, it should be noted that Capt. Werner beat the odds. He survived to tell his tale. 80% of his fellow submariners would perish under the waves as in the later years of the war each mission was essentially a suicide mission. One of these "ramming" suicide missions was even ordered of his boat in the weeks after D-Day, and incredibly, some of his fellow sailors on other submarines would die following these orders.

Werner's odyssey began when, on his first mission, the U-230 got stuck on the ocean floor and the crew spent 16 hours jettisoning water and weight out the torpedo tubes, and then ran from one end to the other to rock the boat free. So started his career. The number of close calls he and his ship would encounter over the course of the war, and survive, is equivalent to winning a lottery. Werner and crew had lady luck on their side at times, but many other escapes were a direct result of his competence and the crews bravery. It is a fascinating tale. The new radar that submarines employed in 1942 was later discovered to be acting like a homing beacon for allied aircraft, leading to the deaths of many crews from giving away their position before this error was discovered and fixed. By 1943 the Allies had prefected their hunt and destroy tactics so that many of these subs were unable to escape when their positions were verified. Many, many last reports from Werners classmates and fellow submariners were received onboard the U-230 before they went down with the loss of all hands. These haunting messages were continually relayed to Werner and his sub and somehow this man was able to keep from being part of the majority of brave sailors who died an anonymous death in the deep waters of the Atlantic ocean.

Simply an unforgettable book to read. One of the finest first person accounts of WWII that I have read to date. Ranks right up there with the works of Guy Sajer and Eugene Sledge.

EXCELLENT 'INSIDE-THE-U-BOAT" WARTIME COVERAGE

This is the very best book I have read actually describing the conditions inside a German u-boat during World War II Atlantic Ocean war patrols. It is well written with both action and information in mind. The action standpoint is superb and makes the reader wonder how Capt Werner and his crew ever survived the punishment they took in their little fragile "egg" as aircraft and ships constantly dropped bombs and depth charges on them. From the information standpoint, Werner gives us a very comprehensive and interesting description of what it is like inside the early u-boats. It is hard to imagine how the crew lived like they did in their constantly rocking boat: without bathing for months, eating moldy food, suffering from constant humidity, freezing or roasting as the season might be (no airconditioning or heaters), and not having proper sanitary conditions (using a bucket in rough seas, etc.) Very good detail on u-boat life both aboard ship and in port. From another information standpoint, Werner gives us a good description of what average Germans were thinking as the war progressed, what sort of damage ordinary citizens were taking as the war proceeded in depth over Germany both from the heavy air bombardment plus the advancement of Allied armies from the south, east, and north. Werner is also a "ladies man" so we do hear a lot about the girlfriends in every port, so to speak, plus German submariners' night life in different occupied locations. (They seemed to like France a lot.) It is good that Werner provides you this gamut of information: living inside the boat, dealing with the difficult navy bureaucracy, joys of in-port liberty, his nice but unfortunte family, the Nazi party bother, and so on since it furnishes the reader with a rounded out picture of life during these unusual times. Werner is lucky to have come back alive, and we are fortunate he wrote this book. His family and many of his friends were not so fortunate as the reader will see.

The Best WWII Book About the Other Side!

The first time I read 'Iron Coffins', it was for a term paper in high school. At that point, all Germans in WWII were evil Nazi stooges with the mental capacity of a slug in salt. Once I started reading Mr. Werner's excellent book, I actually found myself sharing in the excitement as a U-Boat sank Allied ships. I also found myself feeling the dread as Allied escort ships dropped thier deadly depth charges. Iron Coffins is a fast paced book that is hard to put down. One is able to truely experience what the war was like through Mr. Werner's eyes. Once you've finished, your understand something...that just because you are at war with an evil nation doesn't make it's people all evil. Mr. Werner may not have been a celebrated U-Boat commander, but if it weren't for him, we would never truely understand the meaning of the term 'Iron Coffin.'
