Review
How do you write a fake biography of a fake band? With style, writer and Gorillaz touring drummer Browne and comic book illustrator Jamie Hewlett, along with the design collective Zombie Fresh Eaters, answer back lustily. Gorillaz are a music/art hybrid masterminded by Hewlett and Blur frontman Damon Albarn, a veritable cartoon supergroup made up of mountainous B-boy Russel Hobbs, Japanese girl guitarist Noodle, metal-worshipping bassist Murdoc, and hollow-eyed, angular vocalist 2D. They are a genuine pop sensation, with millions of albums of dub/hip-hop/punk sold and concerts mixing animation and live musicians. Rise covers all that but from the "perspective" of the band, with the human creators cast as bit players and the focus squarely on the rise, fall, and rise of four scrappy toonz. The book is equal parts graphic novel, design catalog, and spoof of Steven Davis's Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga, characteristics that easily make it the best-in-the-moment biography of snobs, and devotees of great British art pranks alike will devour it whole. Recommended for libraries of all stripes. -- Library Journal, November 15, 2006

If you LOVE Gorillaz, you have to get this
By Jill Young
This book includes the entire collection of Gorillaz artwork up to Demon Days, (so no Plastic Beach artwork), plus extra artwork created exclusively for the book. Besides the artwork, the book includes the mostly-fiction-semi-nonfiction-pseudo-biography of the Gorillaz starting at the very beginning of the band's coming together and going on to explain how the Gorillaz became "biggest virtual band in the world."

For huge fans, this is something I think you should definitely check out--especially if you like the animation and artwork side of the Gorillaz. If you only ever liked the music and never really dug the music videos or "band members," there isn't much here for you.

The story side of the book is conveyed mostly through "band interviews" and from the characters' perspective. It's not written like a novel. Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlitt helped organize the material and storylines, but it was written by a third person under Albarn and Hewlitt's guidance. Through the story of the band members, reality sometimes peeks through in the form of interviews and name drops of artists who collaborated with Damon Albarn and tour dates and locations, etc.

The interaction and personalities of the "band members"--2D, Murdoc, Russel, and Noodle---are entertaining and often funny, and the convoluted plot is pretty great by itself. Also great is that every non-print Gorillaz "product"--music videos, mini cartoons, songs, albums, band interviews--are all referenced, so you can look them up online and watch/listen if you missed them before.

Everything you could ever want...
By Nick
In one big, beautiful book. You get the low-down on the songs, the stories, the characters... But the best part of all is: THE ART. Jamie Hewett's art is just amazing, it radiates with zany energy. This book is a must-have for any Gorillaz fan.
Man, I remember the first time I saw a Gorillaz video. It was in a shopping mall, and my mom was checking out. They were playing Dare and Feel Good Inc. Being the young, innocent kid that I was, I felt somehow that I wasn't allowed to watch these weird, adult-looking videos. But I was entranced by them. Years later, I randomly found the videos again on the Tube, and I've been a fan ever since.
'Specially of Murdoc.
'Cause Murdoc is God.

Organizations can hire consultants and purchase expensive training programmes - but improvement must still be generated from within. "The Reengineering Alternative" explains how organizations can develop effective improvement plans based upon their unique strengths and corporate objectives. This book should prove valuable to managers who recognize the need for organizational change, but either haven't found an appropriate improvement programme, or can't fit an outside programme into the budget. The book provides a questionnaire readers can use to determine causes of conflict and sources of competitive strength. It demonstrates effective management and helps readers make the most cost-effective decisions concerning change and improvement within their organization.

A practical model of 4 org-culture archetypes
By Daniel Mezick
This is a useful book that pulls together a set of ideas in one model of organizational culture. The book asserts that eventually, all organizational cultures end up more or less fitting into 4 specific categories: Control culture, Competency culture, Collaboration culture, and Cultivation culture. The book provides ABC guidance on how to assess the culture of your company and once complete, use that assessment to play to your strengths while avoiding weaknesses.

This is an interesting book and the framework is useful as an assessment tool. The book's thesis is grounded in actual consulting with real organizations, making the assertions the book makes believable.

That said, the book does tend to promote the idea that no one cultural idea for your organization is better than any other idea. This is probably misguided. The pace of change is demanding that organizations be more and more adaptive. This is true even for the insurance industry, where Schneider did most of his consulting prior to writing this book. The pace of change has accelerated since the early 1990's. It is clear that cultures which value continuous learning are more far more useful and valid than cultures that do not. The word 'learning' does not appear in the index. A quick examination of the pages in this short book reveals that the essential topic of organizational learning is not addressed.

In my view, organizational cultures that are designed to learn fast are clearly superior to those who do not. This book stops short of stating this and instead tends to support the idea that all organizational types are of equal value. "Learning cultures" are superior to others precisely because they can more readily identify and immediately adapt to change. I cover this subject extensively in my own book, THE CULTURE GAME which published in May of 2012.

All in all, this is an important book and one that deserves a careful examination if you are embarking on culture change initiatives in your organization. Recommended.

Nice Blast from the Past - Still Relevant Today
By Tech Guy
I purchased this recently to be able to re-read this gem. For me, this material has always been very relevant. I use the content in my day to day business consulting. I think some may take the content verbatim which is why I hear some negativity. For me, the content is well-described, well-research, etc. I find to this day that the understanding of culture in organizations is part of a larger understanding of success and/or dysfunction. For me this was an enjoyable read (again).

Surfing Uncertainty: Prediction, Action, and the Embodied Mind, by Andy Clark

How is it that thoroughly physical material beings such as ourselves can think, dream, feel, create and understand ideas, theories and concepts? How does mere matter give rise to all these non-material mental states, including consciousness itself? An answer to this central question of our existence is emerging at the busy intersection of neuroscience, psychology, artificial intelligence, and robotics.

In this groundbreaking work, philosopher and cognitive scientist Andy Clark explores exciting new theories from these fields that reveal minds like ours to be prediction machines - devices that have evolved to anticipate the incoming streams of sensory stimulation before they arrive. These predictions then initiate actions that structure our worlds and alter the very things we need to engage and predict. Clark takes us on a journey in discovering the circular causal flows and the self-structuring of the environment that define "the predictive brain." What emerges is a bold, new, cutting-edge vision that reveals the brain as our driving force in the daily surf through the waves of sensory stimulation.

Surfing - Rather, a Very Deep Dive
By Stephen E. Robbins
One has to admire and appreciate Clark. This work represents a tremendous effort at bringing together the many developments in, or related to, the emerging Predictive Processing framework (PP). Though familiar with some of this literature, I was surprised at the scope, depth and breadth of the research efforts in this framework that have been occurring over the years.

The PP framework argues that there is, in the brain, both an up-flow of information from the external world, and most significantly, a down-flow of predictive information, with the predictive information flow actually having priority (suppressing the up-flow), though this priority is constrained by the degree of error in the match between the two flows. The predictions in this neural network/computational framework are in essence probabilistic Bayesian priors, and in one of the significant developments Clark describes, networks/algorithms are being created that learn these priors from the incoming information, thus solving an important bootstrap problem as to how this predictive process gets going. The book goes into the many perceptual phenomena – numerous illusions – that PP can be extended to explain, and the deep ins and outs of this story. Clark devotes a great deal to developing the crucial role of bodily action in this picture – how it is integrally part of PP flows. Throughout, Clark is continually relating things to the many other theorists in or related to this subject – a welcome point of tie-in. Of interest to me were his attempts to tie/reconcile all this to the “enactive” theorists such as Varela, as well as to Gibson’s theory of affordances and the structure of perceptual information. Indeed, Clark describes how PP can be seen/read as supporting the creation of multiple simultaneous “priors” relating to possible affordances (actions) re any given perceptual scene.

Clark is well aware that this framework is no solution to the problem of perception, i.e., what I like to term the origin of the image of the external world. We have two neural or chemical-neural flows – up and down – neither of which look anything like Clark’s example coffee cup on the kitchen table, i.e., like our actual experience of the external world. The down-flowing “prior” for a coffee cup is, nevertheless, only neural firings. He chides PP theorist Jacob Hohwy for arguing that this framework can indeed explain the origin of our experience, as Hohwy invokes the notion that from these flows emerges a “virtual image” of the coffee cup and table. If Clark tends to sin, it is that he slips continually into over-enthusiastic language, e.g., PP is, “…a compelling ‘cognitive package deal’ in which perception, imagination, understanding, reasoning, and action are co-emergent…” If one has no theory of the origin of our image of the external world, one wonders how one can claim a theory of perception? And given no theory of perception, then a theory of memory – of how this perceived experience is stored - is ungrounded (indeed, there is no accepted theory), and given this, how can we be saying we are actually explaining imagination – something which relies on invoking this experience? Yet one finds this type of language throughout the book.

Just to give an idea of where the limitations might lie with which PP and Clark struggle, let me place PP and Clark within another perspective for a moment. PP is an impressive computational framework, but mere, abstract computations cannot account for consciousness – that image of the coffee cup, "out there," on the table, with spoon stirring away. For this, a real, concrete dynamics is needed. As an example of such, consider Bergson’s concept, described in his “Matter and Memory,” 1896. Bergson, to the detriment of his contemporaries understanding him, had presciently anticipated the essence of Gabor’s discovery of holography by fifty years, as well as Bohm’s later generalization of the holographic to the universal field (The Implicate Order, 1980). But contrary to anyone who later tried to employ the holographic framework, e.g., Pribram, what Bergson had argued, in essence, is that the brain is creating (forms globally, across the totality of its processing) a modulated reconstructive wave passing through the external, holographic field and specific to, or specifying, a source of information in the field, and by this process now an image of a subset of the field – the coffee cup and spoon. We are explaining then how perception is limited, not how it arises. The selection of information from the “hologram” is based on its relation to action - to the body’s action capability - and thus, per Bergson, perception is “virtual action.” This is where the “multiple potential affordances as priors” would fit, but this is a very concrete dynamics supported/created by the brain – a concrete wave – as concrete as an AC motor generating a field of electric force. It is within this concrete dynamical structure that the entire PP model and its computations would somehow have to be incorporated as a part – certainly not the whole – of the story. And as perception, in this framework, is not occurring solely within the brain (the specification is to events/objects within the external field, right, for example, where the coffee cup indicates it is), experience cannot be solely stored there (perhaps the source of our theoretical difficulty on storing experience?). A new model of memory retrieval would be required.

Nevertheless, exception above noted, I consider Clark’s work an invaluable and to-be-appreciated source for getting up to speed on the current state of the art and theory in cognitive science and robotics.

Riding the wave of predictive processing
By Steve Benner
Andy Clark is Professor of Logic and Metaphysics in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at Edinburgh University, as well as author of several books on the workings of the human brain and cognitive science in general ("Being There: Putting Brain, Body, and World Together Again", "Supersizing the Mind: Embodiment, Action, and Cognitive Extension", "Mindware: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Cognitive Science", etc). His latest book, "Surfing Uncertainty: Prediction, Action and the Embodied Mind", expands and updates the ideas contained in his earlier books by reviewing the latest thinking with regard to human cognitive processing that is emerging from studies at the intersection of neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, artificial intelligence and robotics. The book expounds and develops a predictive processing ('PP') model for brain functioning which posits human cognition as the product of a hierarchical Bayesian predictive coding engine, endlessly generating probabilistic generative models matched against context-variable precision-weighted input streams -- contributed by the body's exteroceptive, interoceptive and proprioceptive sensing systems -- in a complex cycle of top-down predictions and precision estimations, modulated by a counter-flow of bottom-up residual errors. In short, this model suggests that we perceive the world by first predicting how it should be, based on a series of prior expectations and understandings, using our senses to test the correctness of this prediction and iteratively refining our prediction as necessary to minimise the errors. Only when our cognitive systems finally report that top-down predictions satisfactorily match bottom-up observations does the brain's latest refined view register as our current perception of the world and our state within it.

Central to this model is a view of the brain's role as very different from that traditionally assigned to it by many cognitive scientists. Rather than have the brain as a passive observer, the PP process requires the brain to take on a much more proactive role, not only constantly predicting its most likely sensory input but also driving the body towards the best position to gather that input. The essential feature here is that this positions the brain as a central agency for action and engagement with the world, ensuring that the human animal is best positioned to "surf the uncertainties" of our sensory arrays, not only for survival in a world by avoiding its hazards and exploiting its opportunities, but also for structuring the world itself and altering the very things with which our brains must engage and predict.

What emerges in this book is an elegant and stunningly unified (as well as simplifying) vision of the way the body's cognitive system functions, able not only to model with great precision many of the empirically observed characteristics of human cognition and the way our bodies interact with the world so fluently but also to explain very neatly features such as the autistic spectrum and to shed light on mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. It illuminates other facets of the human condition also, such as dreaming, imagination and the creative urge. And it makes perfect sense from an evolutionary perspective, too. It should be stressed that these ideas are not entirely new, nor are they the author's own: PP is a model of cognitive processing that has been gaining traction for some time now -- for an earlier position of the field, see Jakob Hohwy's 2014 volume, "The Predictive Mind", for instance -- but Andy Clark's survey here is more comprehensive and deeper delving than most others on the subject.

Given its weighty, highly theoretical subject matter, this book is not surprisingly a fairly heavy read. Although the author does his best to keep his text pitched as much for a lay readership as for an expert one, the sheer complexity of many of the ideas and notions that he covers necessitates a certain level of reliance on jargon and the employment of precise technical language; the result otherwise would undoubtedly have been an undesirable degree of ambiguity and vagueness that would have served no purpose whatsoever. The book can be read by an interested lay reader but will still require considerable investment of effort if anything is to be gained from it.

The serious student of the subject should find within its pages an excellent position statement on the current development of PP theories, together with a cogent and succinct analysis of its current shortcomings (few) and useful directions for future investigative activity. Particularly welcome also are the 75 pages of additional notes, appendix and full references, as well as comprehensive index.

Extremely thorough, but a bit shallow in places once you get the general principle
By Eli Gottlieb
Basically, Clark spends the whole book giving a vast overview of the probabilistic turn in neuroscience and cognitive science, emphasizing everywhere how the brain does not merely estimate probability densities of its observables, but also estimates the expected precisions of its actual observations. This helps Clark and the probabilistic mind-scientists to unify a truly astounding amount of experimental data and theoretical machinery.

Clark emphasizes the work of the Friston and Hohwy labs in neuroscience, and occasionally the Tenenbaum and Gershman labs in computational cognitive science. Clark also relentless emphasizes the embodied mind: how based on estimated precisions, the brain learns and recruits chiefly "action-oriented" probability models (or in other words, models which infer an action directly from sensory data, without necessarily encoding a causal reconstruction of the world from sensory data that accounts for all causal structure). In less technical language, the brain uses simpler representations when it expects its experiences to be noisier.

Once you start to understand the general principle, though, you end up realizing the dive into the work is slightly shallow. While too many equations would have bogged down the book, I don't feel like I even remotely understand how precision-weighting can actually work based on the total lack of equations (and graphs, etc) given. Please just show me an equation and a graph to give some intuition for how nonparametric (arbitrarily complicated) probabilistic inference can include estimates of precision. It's easy to assume a normal curve and then infer the precision as a parameter, but what about all the real-world quantities the brain handles that aren't normal curves?

I did, however, especially appreciate the discussion of how precision-weighted probabilistic inference plays into the current view of several major mental illnesses. As the family and friend of some sufferers, I'm pleasantly surprised to find out computational psychiatry is even a thing!

For the deeper look at how specific cognition problems get solved in this framework, I've ended up purchasing "The Predictive Mind" by Jacob Hohwy. We'll see how that goes.

About the Author

Ben Klemens has been doing statistical analysis and computationally-intensive modeling of populations ever since getting his PhD in Social Sciences from Caltech. He is of the opinion that writing code should be fun, and has had a grand time writing analyses and models (mostly in C) for the Brookings Institution, the World Bank, National Institute of Mental Health, et al. As a Nonresident Fellow at Brookings and with the Free Software Foundation, he has done work on ensuring that creative authors retain the right to use the software they write. He currently works for the United States FederalGovernment.

Essentially without competition, though far from perfect
By Alexandros Gezerlis
The C programming language is alive and well: it is used not only in vast amounts of legacy code but also in new development, often when efficiency is important and the learning curve imposed by C++ is deemed unacceptable. As for the literature on C, the standard high-quality text is the one by Kernighan & Ritchie (K&R), while the "second book" genre doesn't have too many representatives. Peter van der Linden's "Expert C programming: Deep C Secrets" and David Hanson's "C Interfaces and Implementations" are probably the best choices (perhaps supplemented by P. J. Plauger's "The Standard C Library"). However, given that all these books date from the 1990s or earlier, a book on modern C programming was sorely needed.

The Good: Ben Klemens' "21st Century C" is a text that assumes some knowledge of classic C and attempts to expand and update that knowledge. This has allowed the author to write a book that is not too long and can thus be read cover-to-cover. Even though this is not an elementary tutorial, the author has also included overviews of some basic concepts to make sure everyone's on board. The writing is for the most part pleasant enough and sometimes even humorous, e.g. "If you and a friend both have v1 [...] Or, if you have no friends". The code for the complete programs shown in the text has been packaged and is available on the publisher's website. Almost all of these programs are easy to compile and run -- this should go without saying, but unfortunately many books are rushed out too soon. One attractive aspect of this volume is that it contains a grab bag of tips (e.g. a function that takes in a pointer to void should immediately assign that to an appropriately typed pointer) as well as welcome summarizations of related topics, bringing to mind books like "Effective C++" and "Effective Java". For example, chapter 6 includes a useful table that goes over valuable aspects of static, automatic, and allocated storage duration (though Klemens doesn't use the standard terms "allocated" and "storage duration" but speaks instead of a "manual memory model"). A cute trick is given soon thereafter, in the form of a macro to initialize a static variable with a nonconstant value. More good macro material is included in later chapters, leading to convenient string-handling or helping us write functions that take in a variable number of named arguments. In the process of doing the latter, Klemens drives home a fun idiom: first define a struct, then define a variadic macro that puts its arguments inside a struct, and finally write a function that takes in a single struct as input. The main selling point of this text is that it's quite up-to-date, repeatedly mentioning C99 and C11. Importantly, the modern C features are not an afterthought but are used throughout the volume. Even so, chapters 9-12 would be the ones most useful to a reader unfamiliar with tools like strtok_s, designated initializers, the _Generic keyword, and anonymous unions. The last 2.5 chapters also attempt to inch toward programming in the large, with Klemens doing things like implementing a dictionary and using libraries (e.g. GSL and GLib) repeatedly. Speaking of libraries, Part I is dedicated to the modern ecosystem around C and is a charming departure from the language-centeredness of most programming books. Apart from giving basic usage info on debugging, Makefiles, and version control software, Klemens also introduces sleek tools like seq, pkg-config, and screen. One way to test an author's pedagogical skills is to evaluate a section containing material one is completely unfamiliar with. For me that applied to the sections on git rebase and on the variables appearing in Makefile.am; in both cases I felt the selection of topics as well as the explanations were nicely done.

The Bad: I begin by discussing structural problems and then go on to cover detailed issues. Klemens mentions in the Preface that "about a third of this book has almost no C code in it." First of all, Part I takes up 100 pages and Part II 150, so it's not really one third. Second, placing the non-C-specific material first leads to an excessive number of forward references. One example: p. 40 constructs the unit tests for a piece of code, p. 72 shows an Automake file that handles that testing, while the C program itself is introduced on p. 212. A related structural/misplacement issue has to do with Klemens' decision to introduce modern C features in chapter 10 (of 12). This wreaks havoc, given that he has (to his credit) opted to use new entities (like designated initializers and compound literals) throughout the text, even if he sometimes doesn't say he's doing so. Turning now to detailed issues, it's worth noting that the book contains many mistakes which are not just first-printing-typos, but flat-out factual errors. Here are a few examples, all drawn from a small fraction of the book: Klemens says that sources in distutils.core.Extension is "an array", even though it is a list of strings; he alleges that the stack size on Linux is limited to 2 or 3 megabytes -- stating this in apparent ignorance of the existence of ulimit and setrlimit; embarrassingly, the first use of pointers in the chapter on pointers contains at least two mistakes in one line (which is shown twice); he confusedly states that "the syntax for a function type is really a pointer to a function of a given type" -- this would mean that we could have array elements that are of function type, which is patently untrue. In other cases, the writing is slipshod: Klemens mentions "a local variable with static linkage" even though there is no such thing as static linkage in C (there's only external, internal, and none); he devotes an entire section to setting the array size at runtime but fails to note that variable-length arrays became optional in C11 -- later on, he can't make up his mind if such arrays can be initialized or not; he counterposes open to "the POSIX fopen" and refers to a "C-standard get_opt function"; he thinks he's uncovered a contradiction in K&R (just to be clear: he hasn't) but can't even be bothered to make the elementary distinction between declarations and definitions; the catalog of such issues is simply too long. In yet other cases, the text is characterized by plain old poor pedagogy, e.g. he defines list[3] and then talks about &list as if he's already explained what that means (when he's only discussed list and &list[0]). On a different note, we get a chapter on extending Python with C, but almost nothing on the impact of C/C++ feature differences. Bjarne Stroustrup has written an interesting article on C and C++'s "sibling rivalry" (which Klemens does not cite). Speaking of Stroustrup, the bibliography's only reference to "The C++ Programming language" is dated 1986 (presumably meaning the 1st edition). It's also worth noting that the bibliography includes two texts by Scott Meyers that are not cited in this book, but no reference to the volume by van der Linden that is the obvious competition in this niche.

In a nutshell, I liked the premise of the book much more than I enjoyed the execution. It was disappointing to see Part II start out by mentioning "especially complicated pointer setups like pointers to functions" only to repeatedly mishandle them near its end (both in the text and in the code). It should be noted that K&R managed to thoroughly discuss function pointers in one short section. Yes, expecting an author to match the quality of K&R is holding him to an impossible standard. But expecting him to write an authoritative and well-structured second book on C isn't as exacting. All in all, three stars.

Recommended for the self-taught programmer or intermediate programmer looking to fill gaps
By Alan Olsen
[This review was written for the 2014 Second edition.]

I have been programming for about 40+ years now. I learned C from a K&R first edition. Much of the bits of C I learned early on no longer work or are recommended these days. The language has changed, the tools have changed, and my watch has more than 1,000 times the memory of my first computer.

This is a book that gives a good refresher course in C. The author has a good knowledge of the history and structure of the language. He warns of the pitfalls and advantages throughout the book.

The book is not the average dry textbook. The style is light and readable, without being "jokey". I did not get bored with it, as I have with some other books.

The book not only covers C, but the tools needed to write good code. This includes Make, Git, GDB, autotools, and valgrind. (Among others.) It also covers a number of useful libraries that most C books ignore. (It does not suffer from the "here are the basics, fend for yourself" style of book.)

The OSes covered are Windows, Mac and Linux. It includes extra help for Windows and Mac, probably because if you are using those OSes, you will need it. (Linux has a much more complete toolchain for writing C code.) There is some mention of setting up a BSD environment, but much of that is covered in the Mac references. (OS X is BSD.)

The version I have is the 2nd edition. It covers C11 and some newer features of the OS and compilers that C programmers need to be aware of. It does not contain everything you need to know, but if it did it would be more than three times the length. The coding environment has been changing a great deal in the last 5-6 years, especially on Linux. This does not try to cover the OS interface issues such as UDEV or DBUS or the like. It is trying to show you more of the changes to the language, using the libraries as an example, not the changes to the overall libraries.

This is not the only book you need to become a good C programmer, but it is one that you will want to have in your library.

Ignore the curmudgeons and get stuff done!
By J. Austin
It's sort of amusing to read all the cranky one-star reviews of this book: "Why would you need a book? Just read the manpages!" "Real men don't use libraries or Autoconf!" "Go back to Ruby and Python you young whippersnappers!" "I don't like macros!" "Get off my lawn with your rock 'n roll and C11 (and C99)!" Wow, did the author graffiti an old folks' home or something?

Here on Earth, this book does for C what dozens of books have done for more modern languages like Ruby or C#. The book shows an intermediate to experienced coder in other languages how to hit the ground running in C. Since C is not exactly like those "other" languages, the advice isn't and shouldn't be the same as for those. You do have to deal with makefiles, and this book will show you several ways to do so. You can't avoid pointers, so he shows you how without pretending that pointers are deep mysterious difficult voodoo. C is not a "batteries included" language, so this book describes several libraries that you should use rather than e.g. implementing linked lists or Unicode handling from scratch by yourself.

By the same token, it's 2013 and C shouldn't be coded the exact way I was taught at university in 1995. Designated initializers prevent errors and make code easier to read. You don't need malloc() for runtime array sizing. It's fine to declare variables where they're used rather than at the top of the scope. Variadic functions are both underpowered and dangerous, but we can use them productively and safely with intelligently written macros using __VA_ARGS__. You still have to manage your own memory in C, but now there is Valgrind, the use of which this book illustrates clearly in a page and a half. Oh yeah, and we have libraries now, so you don't need to malloc() constantly while handling strings either.

I'm actually surprised none of the one-star fogies complained about all the struct-passing, of which I hadn't seen much before and of which there is a great deal in this book. I mean, if compilers in the 1980s only let you stuff so much on the stack, dooming us to ampersands and memory leaks, why should we acknowledge we have better compilers today? I almost suspect they haven't actually read the book...

It's your loss if my snark offends you. The author of this book is opinionated too. He quotes dissident punk bands with vulgar names at the beginning of chapters. He has specific recommendations for what tools to use and how to use them. In case you need convincing not to hobble yourself with an IDE, he shows you why a decent editor and the command line is better. He doesn't tell you how to use M$ tools because they suck (e.g. they're stuck forever on C89). The dozens of oddball build tools that have cropped up to replace make have failed to do so, and make is demonstrated repeatedly here to show you why.

I love K&R, but the world has changed since 1989, and this is the first C book I've read that realizes that.

About the Author

Andrea Dalle Vacche

Andrea Dalle Vacche is a highly skilled IT professional with over 14 years of experience in the IT industry and banking. He graduated from Universita degli Studi di Ferrara with an information technology certification. This laid the technology foundation that Andrea has built on ever since. Andrea has acquired various industry-respected accreditations, which include Cisco, Oracle, RHCE, ITIL, and of course, Zabbix. Throughout his career, he has worked in many large-scale environments, often in roles that have been very complex, on a consultant basis. This has further enhanced his growing skill set, adding to his practical knowledge base and increasing his appetite for theoretical technical studying. Andrea's love for Zabbix came from his time spent in the Oracle world as a database administrator/developer. His time was spent mainly on reducing ownership costs, specializing in monitoring and automation. This is where he came across Zabbix and the flexibility it offered, both technically and administratively. With this as a launch pad, Andrea was inspired to develop Orabbix, the first open source software to monitor Oracle's complete integration with Zabbix. He has published a number of articles on Zabbix-related software, such as DBforBIX. His projects are publicly available at http://www.smartmarmot.com. Currently, Andrea is working as a senior architect for a leading global investment bank in a very diverse and challenging environment. He deals with many aspects of the Unix/Linux platforms as well as many types of third-party software, which are strategically aligned to the bank's technical roadmap. In addition to this title, Andrea Dalle Vacche is a coauthor of Mastering Zabbix, Packt Publishing.

By Kent Tenney
Zabbix is extremely powerful, extensible and scalable. With this comes complexity. This book does a good job of explaining just how Zabbix works and how to get the most from it. I'd take some exception with the 'Essentials' component of the title, most of the Packt 'Essentials' books are more basic than this. If you're starting from scratch, this may not be the book for you. Recommended.

Book is for an older version - Zabbix 4.2
By Tikken
Book is for an older version (Zabbix 4.2), enough so that I cannot use the code snippets offered. I had hoped to use this book as a walk-thru to get a test environment of Zabbix running, but alas, no. It's more for use as general understanding of how Zabbix works. Also, as the comments say, it's not for the host monitoring, for any agent use is excluded, so it's primarily for snmp and ping and the like.

Installation of Zabbix, managing the hosts manually or with the network discovery and see the result in maps.
This book provides all the necessary to monitor your network with SNMP.
