It is also theoretically sophisticated, offering an innovative hermeneutical critique of post-colonial and subaltern studies.

Incredible book!! Very exciting, interesting read on a topic that most people don't know about. Since my own work and soon-to-be-published book is about the Black Pacific, this book is particularly salient and important. Social justice movements often suffer from lack of historical details and ignoring the links and influences and divergences that make-up the movements, usually only getting the "official" stories and histories. This book is a great glimpse into the particular lands and cultures covered.

A shocker

This book is a dreadful mix of repetitive, redundant code chunks and a strained chatty style of writing. It will leave most readers determined never to go near XML again. Indeed, nowhere in the book are reasons why you would wish to use it. But worse is that the book focuses on Internet Explorer exclusively, including Active-X and Microsoft's non-standard brand of the DOM. Under the aegis of XHTML Transitional it introduces beginners to the likes of the "popular" tag with all its long-deprecated attributes, not to mention many other deprecated tags, inline JavaScript event handlers, and other aspects more suited to the state of markup in 1999 than to 2009 - the year of publication.

During the course of the book there is no signal to the reader that this or that code approach is proprietary and not standard. If beginners wish to learn standards-compliant, interoperable code and where and why you might want to deploy it, they should give this book a wide berth.

No real help for XQuery

With "Go Beyond the Basics with ... XQuery" in its title, I was hoping the book would provide details on how to use XQuery. Unfortunately, the book devotes only six pages to the subject, almost three of which are just a list of functions (i.e., no actual analysis or demonstrations on how to use them). I have not reviewed the rest of the book, but if you're looking for help with XQuery, this is not the source.

Good book on XML

I found the book easy to read and informative. The code is simple but get the point across. The writing style is conversational, but I like that in a book. Moreover, it is not Microsoft centric as some have suggested. I have read over a dozen XML books and I found that this was the best one so far.

Bruce J. Fried, PhD, is associate professor and director of the residential master s degree program in the Department of Health Policy and Administration in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He teaches in the areas of human resources management, international and comparative health systems, and globalization and health. Dr. Fried is also coeditor of and contributor to World Health Systems: Challenges and Perspectives, Second Edition (Health Administration Press, 2012).

Myron D. Fottler, PhD, is professor of health services administration at the University of Central Florida, where he teaches courses in healthcare human resources management, service management and marketing, and a doctoral seminar in health services research. He has written and published 25 books and more than 150 journal articles. His most recent co-authored books include Achieving Service Excellence: Strategies for Healthcare (Health Administration Press, 2010); Strategic Human Resource Management in Healthcare (Emerald Group Publishing, 2010); The Retail Revolution in Health Care (Prager, 2010); Biennial Review of Health Care Management(Emerald Group Publishing, 2011); Human Resource Management Applications: Cases, Exercises, Incidents, and Skill Builders (South-Western Cengage Learning, 2011); and Handbook of Healthcare Management (Elgar, 2015).
