Inspiring Creatives to become Makers

As an entrepreneur who works in various sectors in various ways, I just love this book.

'Make Your Mark' aims to serve individuals and teams that are seeking to make the jump from a brilliant notion to real-time value-creation.

It's not a how-to book,exactly. It's a why-to book, if anything.

It's filled with questions and insights that others have found valuable.

The format is very easy-to-digest, well-presented quotations and brief essays (e.g. two-five pages) on a range of issues from the ethereal ("Finding Your Purpose and Living it") to the most down-to-earth ("Solving a Real Problem").

If you're looking for actionable inspiration in transforming a project from the "creative" phase to the "maker" phase, you'll find value in this interesting read. In the nature of the offering, it's likely that people will find value in different parts of the book, at different times and places. That said, if a single idea in the book has traction for you--or if an insight or question in the book prompts something unexpected in your own mind--then it's well worth the purchase price....

Great Companion for New Projects or Ideas

This book sold me in the foreword which states, "Art, without distribution and discovery moves nobody.... Thought, if not written down and shared with others, changes nothing...Creation must be made accessible for consumption. This is your real job." (p.17-18, written by Scott Belsky) Wow. Ponder that for awhile if you've been keeping your ideas or projects in your head for too long.

I am in the process of developing several new projects at work, and I admit to a tendency to think too long before taking action. I also sometimes over-complicate things. What I really liked about this book is that it focuses on both the mindsets needed and the actions which must be taken to move a project or idea forward.

While the premise of the book is that you're creating a business, I found the concepts just as helpful for projects. Some of the concepts I particularly liked were the notion that you need to build leaders not followers on your team, that you need to start before you feel ready (because you'll never feel like you're ready), the importance of storytelling, keeping the design of your idea/program as simple as possible, and know why you're doing what you're doing.

I think this would be a great book for anyone who has to design and carry out programs or initiatives at their workplace or in their personal life. This book is a great companion and reminds creative types to develop the necessary business-related skills to make their product known to the world. Very motivating and inspiring.

Crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside.

Make Your Mark: The Creative's Guide to Building a Business With Impact is a slickly designed, if ultimately self-congratulating text on how to become more than just a "creative," but, rather, a businessman. Pulling stories from prominent innovators in diverse industries, Make Your Mark comes off as more "self-help" book than legitimate resource. Perhaps the earliest, most glaring instance of this is when the author of the section references "Richard Leider, one of the world's foremost experts on purpose." Seriously? That's a job title? An expertise? It honestly feels like an Emperor's New Clothes scenario, and begs the question, how is Mr. Leider producing that volume of Kool Aid, and then successfully convincing people to drink it? Calling this a "guide" stretches the word to its breaking point.

While there are certainly stand-out sections, particularly Tim O'Reilly's, web innovator and founder of O'Reilly Media, the remainder brings to mind men standing on well-lit stages with jeans and a lightly ruffled sport coat dropping business-isms like "synergy." "Becoming a startup titan is tough and many people fail," the book tells you, but then quietly assures you that "you are different: you are a creative but a realist, an idea-man with the execution to boot." It's all seems a bit disingenuous, and certainly not practical.

However, if you can look beyond the back-patting and fraternity style ego-boosting, the book is truly a beautiful thing to look at.

A Seminal Who Dunnit

I rate this novel 5 stars. I rate it primarily on originality, plot and pacing, and the ability to mask the identity of the culprit to the very end. This may be one of the most original crime novels ever written. I'm of the opinion that this may be the first ever "Procedural" type of crime story. Where the story is revealed bit by bit as the facts become available, and in a logical sequence that doesn't stretch the reader's credulity, while at the same time taking numerous twists and turns along the way. Anyone familiar with the style of CSI or Law and Order would easily recognize the way the story is built up. And the surprise ending? A surprise! What else could it be. You won't be able to figure out who the murderer is until the very end.

Though written in the third person, there is no omniscience at work in this story, all of the action is seen through the eyes of the main character, or, through what other characters say in his presence. We follow the main character through the story as he discovers the facts of the case, right up to the very end. This allows the reader to stay abreast of the story, with no marvelous intuition guiding the story to conclusion. This isn't Sherlock Holmes, or Hercule Poirot, summing it all up as simply a logical deduction to anyone with the ability to reason it out, no, this is a step-by-step resolution of the crime using clues to the story gathered along the way.

This is the best work by this author that I have read.

Good Old Fashioned Murder Mystery

Very enjoyable romp

An immensely enjoyable detective romp, first published in 1919. The writing is sometimes a bit stiff and pompous, but the plot is satisfyingly dense, the mystery is intriguing, and the atmosphere and characterization (which are the point of the whole thing) are top-notch. My favourite was the old stamp dealer who exclaims, "You think and argue on modern lines -- which are, of course, highly superior."

Th is is a great book I love barbeque eating and cooking it as well, this book is well written with clear instructions,the barbeque always turns
out good but one of the hidden gems in this book is the sides and desserts,most of the time in alot og other cookbooks they appear to be after thoughts not this time,this time they are awesome and can stand with any dish you prepare.If you like a well rounded cook book with alot of interesting recipes this book is for you.

Need to buy Dave's BBQ sauce and steak seasoning along with the book to make many recipes as written

Nice looking book; lots of very pretty pictures and interesting looking recipes. However, be aware that if you want to make many of these recipes the way they were intended to be made, you must use Famous Dave's brand of BBQ sauce and/or steak seasoning. (That's why my rating is only 4 stars.)

I was hoping to make them with things I had on hand. I could use a different brand of BBQ sauce and steak seasoning; I might. Luckily, I do have a Famous Dave's restaurant within a mile of my house. I assume they sell their products. (They are fairly new to the neighborhood, so we haven't gone there yet, as we don't eat out much.) If you don't have a Famous Dave's nearby, you might want to consider ordering his BBQ sauce and steak seasoning when you order the cookbook, if you want to make many of the recipes, as they are written, as soon as your book arrives.

New Trading Dimension

The 1st 2 chapters are somewhat of ramble where the author describes the "metaphysics" of trading. Still some good ideas are offered. The book references chaos theory, and leaves it up to the reader to believe whether "supercomputers" were used in formulating the various trading methods (the author wants to come across as an applied mathemetician, but he sure looks like a stock trader to me). There isn't any obvious connection with Chaos Theory - but let's be honest: what would we really do with it if it was there?
I give the book 5 stars, and I'd give it 10 if they were available. The reason is that despite the weak link between the title and content, the trading methodologies do work. Both in backtestng and in 2 months real time, I've found the author's systems to be a perfect filter and trigger for a short term trading system. He states a goal of 10%/month, but when these filters & axioms are correctly combined with a good momentum system, much more is a probable result. There's better written & more informative books out there for less money, but this author does have the "Holy Grail" of stock trading. A set of filters, axioms, and methods which are the "missing link" for any trading system which is based upon conventional indicators.

I just finished programming the entire system into Tradestation 2000i, I double checked it by checking it against his own proprietory software to make sure it works and I can tell you that if you choose the right securities to trade based on the sleeping alligator that this is an excellent system or at least an excellent start of a system. This book uses a proven methodology however you won't be able to tell that if you just trade it straight, you have to use all the resources mentioned in the book to fully appreciate it, please don't just mechanically program it into a computer and go by those results but use the tools or Atti-tools fully.

Also to get a more complete picture I read his first book "Trading Chaos" which detailed how to find the zero point or end of a trend where you would initiate your trading
