Each receives an important assignment, even Greedy Apostrophe, who has a well-deserved reputation for his bad attitude. Maniacal Greedy isn't content with doing his job (creating a possessive in a sign); he insists on confusing matters by inserting himself into words where he's not wanted. Greedy slips into a school classroom, altering signs such as "Pencils and Rulers" into "Pencil's" and Ruler's," until the students give chase. Since they can't catch him, he's still on the loose! Students are asked to be vigilant and to take Greedy away from all the places where he inserts himself but doesn't really belong. With jazzy colors and cartoon-style characters, the upbeat artwork gives personality to the inanimate while underscoring the witty, vivacious tone of the text. In this zany tale of a problem with some apostrophes, the Director of Punctuation, an austere-looking felt-tip marker, calls all the punctuation marks to order at their job-assignment meeting. Of all those present, only Greedy Apostrophe refuses to recite the Punctuation Oath. Disaster strikes when he is given the last assignment-to show possession. He "was always getting in trouble with possession!" Though he listens to the explanation of appropriate usage, he runs amok when he enters the store, misapplying apostrophes to signs for puppets ("puppet's"), marbles ("marble's"), and yo-yos ("yo-yo's") and confusing the customers. Clever children at the school across the street quickly spot the mistakes, but Greedy Apostrophe eludes them and remains at large. The expressions on Long's bright and quirky punctuation people will delight early elementary listeners. The book incorporates clearer explanations and a wider array of apostrophe use than Moira Rose Donahue's Alfie the Apostrophe (Albert Whitman, 2006).Grade 1-3.

Brian Karas. In springtime, she especially loves to bring home big, fragrant bunches of lilacs and to smell the earthy scent in the air. She lives with her family in New York City.

My son loves it!

My son, who is five, picked this book out at the library one day and loved it. I thought it was a little too advanced for him, but he said he wanted to have one we could keep at home. So I got it for him for Christmas. This book is a very good learning tool, and my son asks lots of questions when we read it.

An Apostrophe Lesson

I enjoyed this book with my 7 year old son and he liked it. The pictures are funny and help keep the punctuation lesson on a fun level. I' not convinced that he'll know how to use the apostrophe from reading this one book but at least he'll have a head start.

Read to Learn

I love a book that is so much fun that you don't realize you are learning while reading it. I shared this book with some young readers recently and they loved the fun story and we were able to talk about all of the various punctuation marks and when to use which one. Do I believe you can learn the concept solely on this book? Probably not, but that is what school is for. If you like to share stories with your young reader that teach a lesson then read on my friend. Any beginning reader/writer is sure to enjoy!

Kevyn Aucoin came to New York in 1983 and less than a year later was booked with Steven Meisel for his first Vogue cover. He has more covers to his credit than any other makeup artist, and is the recipient of the first-ever CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Award for makeup artistry. He lives in New York City.

That's the Sound of Life, That's the Sound of Death

Kawabata Yasunari won the Nobel Prize in 1968 and this novel above all his others, in my opinion, gives readers a chance to find out why. This is a classic of world literature, a work of genius. It is a finely-written tale of family, a simple story about an older man who is fond of his daughter-in-law, though his relations with his own two grown children, son and divorced daughter, are ambiguous. The story line, as in other Kawabata novels, is simple----there are no great events, no dramatic conclusions or climaxes. Natural phenomena---birds, animals, plants, and weather---play a large role in setting the mood and are used as symbols throughout. Far from being a recurring theme, the "sound of the mountain" is heard only once, on page 10, yet it and many other signs presage changes in life that follow a pattern unseen by human eyes.
The most amazing thing about THE SOUND OF THE MOUNTAIN is its capacity to summarize or to encapsulate family life, the compexity of family relationships. The only other book I know that comes close is Christina Stead's "The Man Who Loved Children", but that is a most verbose book whose characters verbalize nearly every emotion, or else the author does it for them. Kawabata's novel, however, succeeds in portraying family life equally well, if not better, with an absolute minimum of brush strokes. The indecision, the steps not taken, the regrets, the lost loves who return in dreams---all the myriad small events from which marriages and families are constructed---flow in a way that is both typically Japanese and universal. Shingo, the old man, was particularly kind towards Kikuko, his daughter in law, who "was for him a window looking out of a gloomy house." "Kindness towards her was a beam lighting isolation. It was a way of pampering himself, of bringing a touch of mellowness into his life." There is nothing so definite (or crass) as an out-and-out love affair between the two. Rather, there are solutions that are no solutions, compromises that have to paper over the disappointments. Life goes on and Hollywood is for children. What a brilliant book !

Pure genius

If Picasso had written a book �The art of painting� would anyone buy the book and think they could paint like Picasso, or would you have purchased the book to read about how a genius learned and practiced his craft? Kevyn�s first book �The Art of Makeup� is about the art of the craft had how Kevyn (and his mentors and predecessors) elevated putting on facepaint to an artform. As a freelance makeup artist I appreciated the book as a celebration of makeup and not a how to manual. Fortunately, Kevyn�s second book �Making Faces� is more of a makeup 101

Not a guidebook for the novice.

This is really the Art of make up. It doesn't give you step-by-step instructions for applications. It has great pictures of celebrities and autobiographical text by Aucoin. I thought it would help me learn more about make- up applications. I guess I wanted a face map. The pictures are great and he is an artist, but I didn't learn much from the book, other than some history on Kevin Aucoin...
