Another starring role for Jim Williams

This beautifully illustrated book was assembled by Dorothy Williams Kingery, Jim Williams' sister. Jim Williams, the central character of the bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, was a charismatic, multi-talented, antique dealer-restorer-musician-artist-interior decorator. He restored 60 or more houses and buildings in Savannah, Beaufort and other places in the area. He was imaginative and bold. Much of the text was written by Jim Williams, some, if not most, while he was imprisoned. His writing skills are equal to his artistry. This book is a marvelous companion to "the book" as Savannah residents refer to Midnight, which showed Williams as a complex human being but couldn't really do justice to his genius.

A good start

The first third of the b ook is really useful information to the staffer new to DC. I presume some of this must be taught in the party seminars for newly elected members. The last half of the book is like a big, fat American government textbook. There is nothing harmful here, but it does review the stuff we were supposed to have learned as freshmen in college.

I stumbled across book 2 in a store and become completely hooked! I had never done e-books until I HAD to read books 1 & 3. The only thing I didn't like, was the fact that they had to end. I Loved the series!!

Of Blood and Passion is the third and final installment in author Pamela Palmer's Vamp City trilogy. The trilogy features Quinn Lennox as the apparent last sorceress who has finally come into her Blackstone inheritance. She must now try and save Vamp City and those she loves like her vampire lover Arturo Mazza and her brother Zack from dying of magic sickness. In order to do so, she must defeat Cristoff Gonzaga, renew the magic that is rapidly decaying, and destroy a sword called Escalla. Not such an easy feat.

For those who haven't read this series yet, Vamp City is a dark, alternate place that was created to be exactly like 1870 Washington DC. The City was created by a powerful wizard named Phineas Blackstone. There is no sunlight, only darkness. VC is a city that is filled with vampires who feed off emotions. Some humans have found themselves becoming Slava's or immortals after staying in VC for more than 2 years. There are certain vampires, like Arturo, who can cross over and back again from VC to modern day DC. This gives them a chance to bring things back that they desire or need to survive.

Quinn, Zack, and his friend Lily found out the hard way that the place existed when they stumbled through an apparent wormhole/shimmer and found themselves in a place where vampires, fae, werewolves, and an assortment of humans who have been stuck in VC for years. In this reality, if a human doesn't return to their own world, they become immortal. Humans are also traded like livestock and forced to fight to the death.

Quinn isn't an easy character to get into at times. Besides the fact that she stumbled upon VC and then is cast as its savior, makes for a very interesting choices. Her relationship with Arturo hasn't exactly been easy either. She's been betrayed by him several times, got to the point where she didn't give a crap whether or not VC fell or was saved. But, now she has more than enough allies from vampires, werewolves, fae and humans to make it hard to watch them all wither away and die thanks to her doing nothing.

Quinn has some very interesting new strengths, and with a touch, she can drain a vampire of their life force. Also, thanks to Quinn's attempt at renewing the magic in VC, a majority of vampires are now regaining their souls, and that makes for an interesting twist since they are more aware of what they've done to humans, and others. Some will think that Quinn's over protection of her brother is from her own experiences as being abandoned. You could say that, or you can say that her brother Zack is the only one who never left her, or never betrayed her. Until she found herself in VC and found herself with a whole new family and responsibilities.

As the final novel in a series, Of Blood and Passion ends on a high note. I really liked the final battle between Quinn, her allies, and Cristoff. Palmer really didn't leave anything on the editing room floor. She put every character into harms way. She gave Quinn some impressive new allies, including her own brother and those from the Levenach side of her powers. And, her relationship with Arturo ends in a good place, and not always at each other's throats.

Focused on Character Not Behavior

Not since Parenting is HEART Work has there been another parenting book that I really liked. Most parenting books annoy me. Why? Because I find them gimmicky or filled with tricks and cliche's that don't treat children as unique creations of God wired by Him for a purpose. I'm passionate about this because as a boy I was one of those boys that drove my teachers crazy - I wasn't rebellious, disrespectful, mean or insubordinate - but they might have called me a "bad boy" when I was out of ear shot. Because I didn't come out of a cookie cutter. But if they could see me now, they'd understand, I'm a leader, a visionary, a creative innovator, inventor and initiator. An entrepreneur. A mover-and-shaker. I still can't sit still.

That is why I was hesitant when I was offered a free copy of Spiritual Parenting to review, because it was a new "parenting" book, and I hate parenting books! Parenting books teach parents how to get their kids to behave, and if you've been to any of my discipline workshops, you've heard me say,

"I have absolutely NO interest in children behaving."

After the shocked faces recover, I assure them, behavior will improve, but what I'm interested in is shaping their character and their hearts. If you change their behavior - you succeed in making little Pharisees out of them. Training them how to "act" when adults are around. And what happens when the adults are no longer around. Uh, huh. Exactly!

An Excellent Resource for Parents

Spiritual Parenting by Michelle Anthony stands out amongst the crowd of Christian books by grounding parenting in discipleship. Instead of focusing parental energy on sin management, Anthony urges parents to share their lives transformed by the gospel. "The goal of spiritual parenting is that our children would learn to hear and know God's voice, desire to obey it, and obey it in the power of God's Spirit, not their own strength."

With a goal of passing down a vibrant faith, Anthony describes environments and values that we should consciously cultivate in parenting: storytelling, identity, faith community, service, out of the comfort zone, responsibility, course correction, love and respect, knowing, and modeling. I found each chapter encouraging. Though Anthony is not coming from a covenantal perspective, I found her ideas and examples compelling and easy to comport to a reformed theology of children.

As twenty-first century evangelicals reconsider how to do church, the way we raise children in the faith must be part of that conversation. Anthony's book is a good start for parents to consider some of the fundamental concerns of raising children who share an authentic and transformational faith. It also serves as a necessary reminder that parents are responsible for the spiritual formation of their children, and how they live is much more important to that development than anything that happens for an hour or two a week.

It is a temptation for parents to look for someone to tell them just what to do, and this book is not structured to feed that. Anthony encourages parents to know their children, embrace the way God made them, and parent them as individuals. Without a formula to follow, parents are better reminded of their eternal focus. "What is our job then? The joy of parenting can be spent on cultivating environments for our children's faith to grow, teaching them how to cultivate a love relationship with Jesus as we cultivate our own, living our lives authentically in front of them so that they become eyewitnesses to our own transformation. Best Parenting Advice Ever

Read this book. If Christ is the center of my life, He will be in my kids' lives too, right? This book helped me to realize that is my TRUE role as a parent. Then it showed me some awesome ways to prepare them to know their God who loves them. The satisfactory behavior is just a side effect! :)
