About the Author
Ronald L. Grimes is co-editor of the Oxford Ritual Studies Series and the author of several books on ritual, most recently The Craft of Ritual Studies. Grimes resides in Waterloo, Ontario, where he is Director of Ritual Studies International and Professor Emeritus of Religion and Culture at Wilfrid Laurier University. Recently, he has held the following positions: Visiting Professor of Religious Studies at Charles University, Prague in the Czech Republic; Senior Researcher and Senior Lecturer at Yale University; Chair of Ritual Studies at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

Best Embodying The Noncommittal Nature Of Ritual Studies

"I'm hoping to provoke you into doing your own reimagining of ritual, its theories, and the methods for studying it - even if you do so against what I have written here." With these words, Ronald Grimes concludes the main body of his new book, The Craft Of Ritual Studies. It's a generous spirit with which to write a guide for students of ritual, and one that reflects the noncommittal approach that has come to typify the study of ritual.

It's ironic that the academic tradition of ritual studies has become so reluctant to adopt any particular stance about how ritual works, or even what ritual is. Ritual, after all, is a practice that requires some form commitment - at least enough to translate abstract ideas into concrete action, and often a great deal more than that. Over the last few decades, ritual studies has wandered away from clear, inspiring metaphors into a misty territory of abstractions that often reads more like philosophy than a description of a form of human behavior.

Such an approach is appropriate for academics, who specialize in sustaining intellectual debate. It hasn't produced much of use for those who would seek to apply the dynamics of ritual, rather than merely discussing ideas of ritual. To actually work in ritual requires more firm ground than ritual studies can offer.

It's important, in reading this book, to remember that it is written for an academic audience - for students and professors whose goal is to publish papers, and perhaps books, with which to earn academic advancement. It is not written for consultants or managers who seek to learn about ritual so that they can craft more fruitful experiences. Those who would apply ritual dynamics are currently without a guide, and the Craft of Ritual Studies does not bridge the gap between academic study and practice.

However, of all the books that have been written by specialists in ritual studies, The Craft Of Ritual Studies goes the furthest in providing concrete ideas about how to organize research of rituals. Unlike other books about ritual studies, which focus on ritual theory and on research findings, The Craft Of Ritual Studies explores the methods of research. So, while Ronald Grimes refuses to commit to any particular model of ritual, he at least provides those of us who seek to apply ritual dynamics with a set of tools for researching ritual activities, and for critically considering the models we adopt, not as final truths, but as solid methods for practice.

The Craft of Ritual Studies is at its strongest in the lists that Grimes provides, which show the comprehensive scope of Grimes' consideration of ritual - a benefit of his decades of experience in the area. This book should be read by anyone who seeks to study ritual, either as an academic or in the application of ritual dynamics - not because Grimes always makes the most useful judgments about how ritual works, but because he has identified the most useful questions that students of ritual can ask.

About the Author

Dr. AnnMarie Thomas is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of St. Thomas. Her teaching and research focus on engineering design, particularly as it relates to PK-12 education. With her students, AnnMarie explores the playful side of engineering exploring topics such as Squishy Circuits, the Engineering of Circus, and toy design. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of St. Thomas, AnnMarie taught at Art Center College of Design. AnnMarie served as the Founding Executive Director of the Maker Education Initiative. She is the mother of two young makers. AnnMarie has an SB in Ocean Engineering (with a minor in Music) from MIT, MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Caltech, and a professional certificate in Sustainable Design from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

The instruction manual for raising maker kids

I am not an objective reviewer, since I am the father of three of the makers interviewed in the book, yet it seemed to me that AnnMarie Thomas did a great job of explaining what made my kids tick. I only wish my wife and I had gotten to read this book while we were still raising our family. It is full of ideas of how to encourage and inspire young makers. This is a manual that I wish we could have read.

Enlightening Book

This book was very enlightening. It allowed me to see myself at several turns and also why I tend to surround myself with certain people (other makers). The book also reminded me of some of the freedoms that I need to allow my youngest to have so that he too can unleash the maker within if that's what he wants to do.

An important contribution to systemic ideas and practice.

This is a terrific book. Among its great strengths is its contribution to the pedagogical problem of moving students from the culturally instantiated perspective on the individual as the basic unit of social analysis to looking first at that patterns of communication that people co-create. Especially useful are the case examples used by the authors to show the way they work. That is crucial for moving students to a systemic perspective. These authors have worked productively on the problem of how to move people from problematic patterns of communication to productive ones. Although the examples in the book come from family practice, they are readily applicable to organizational consultation, coaching, etc.
