Although 2 Samuel begins with the death of his predecessor, Saul, and follows through to David's old age, the so-called Succession Narrative comprises most of the story in the book, telling how David built his kingdom and survived all threats to its continuity. It culminates in the final act of placing Solomon on the throne, which spills over into 1 Kings 1-2.

Anderson considers the Succession Narrative to be an apology-an official interpretation of significant events, not a eulogy written to the greater glory of either David or Solomon. Rather, it was intended to show that David, in spite of a series of near disasters, was not under a curse; and it maintains that Solomon was the rightful heir to David's throne, even though popular expectations as well as Solomon's youth and parentage apparently led many contemporaries to question that judgment.

The issue was not "Who of David's sons will be king?" the author points out, but more likely " Is there any of David's sons fit to sit on the throne of David?"

The commentary offers a full general bibliography with additional specialized listings of up-to-date bibliographies at the beginning of each chapter and of each section of the Introduction. The Introduction discusses:

The literary history of2 Samuel
Samuel's relation to the books of Joshua, Judges, and Kings
The Succession Narrative
The text of2 Samuel and its research
The use of2 Samuel in the Scriptures.

The volume provides a fresh translation with detailed explanatory notes concerning original word choices. Carefully evaluating textual evidence from the Masoretic Text, the Septuagint, Qumran texts, the Targums, and Latin texts, Anderson holds that no one of these has a monopoly as "the best witness" to the original text. Each variation is thus evaluated for the contribution it can make.

About the Author

Ira Milligan and his wife Judy founded Servant Ministries Inc. in 1986. They have served God since 1962. They travel internationally, presenting such seminars as: Dreams and Their Interpretation; Counseling and Inner Healing; Spiritual Warfare; and Prophets and Personal Prophecy.�Ira has taught classes on counseling as a guest lecturer at Oral Roberts University. Ira and Judy have four children and eleven grandchildren.�They currently reside in Tioga, Louisiana.

Different From All The Rest

As one who has been a dreamer all my life and as a minister others seek out to interpret their dreams, I have read and consulted a lot of dream books. The Ultimate Guide to Understanding the Dreams You Dream, Biblical Keys for Hearing God's Voice in the Night, is different. This book presents expanded biblical perspective for interpretation. Of course there are other books that use the Bible as the basis for dream interpretation, but none I have read that are as biblically thorough and biblically extensive as this one. It truly lives up to its name as "The Ultimate Guide."

The understanding of dreams gained from studying the material in this book also brings additional enlightened understanding of scripture which is exciting and delightful for those who study the Word regularly.

The chapters and sections are manageable as study and exploration go. Not too much to grasp or relate to all at once and not too much to chart to aid dream interpretation. In fact, the author does an excellent job of outlining systems that cut categories of dream symbolism down to size so they can be easily remembered and applied because they make sense according to our everyday lives. More than charts to memorize, this book presents systems to use and explanations instead of charts.

The tone of the book is very lighthearted and conversational even humorous which makes the heavy subject matter easier to digest. It not only teaches the basic precepts of dream interpretation, it also enables revelation and understanding when there needs to be action. I experienced an anointing on this book that increased my memory of my dreams, my consciousness in my dreams, as well as interpretation and revelation flowing from my dreams. I was more than impressed.

As God pours out His Spirit and dreams and visions are increasing, this text is also quite timely for the perfecting of the saints and to prepare the way of the Lord's second coming. It makes interpretation and revelation of dreams much more accessible for the saints since dreams are a major way God speaks to us. It allows us to use cultural experiences to make sense of our dreams as well as the Bible. In other words, the systematic premises and principles posited just make sense.

This book is defiantly for someone who is religious and is looking for a deeper meaning to dreams. I found the material to be very helpful in many ways however interpreting a dream is still very difficult. The first half of the book is a basic understanding of what dreams are and how they are incorporated to God's message. The author describes different types of dreams and visions and compares them to scriptures in the bible. There are three chapters that are mainly focused on numbers and one chapter for color and direction (north, east, south, west, front, backward, etc.). The second half of the book is a glossary of terms that consist of the following; animals, buildings (rooms, places), directions (front, back), metals, numbers, people (relatives, trades), vehicles-parts and miscellaneous. The glossary is not well defined like typical dream book and is paralleled to a scripture. For example a typical dream that everyone has had is in regards to falling. The definition in the book for falling is as follows: unsupported; loss of support (financial, moral, public) trial; succumb; backsliding. The definitions are very vague which will make the reader have to think outside of the box and dissect each dream into many different pieces.

I will recommend this book to those who are spiritual and believe in God and wish to embrace the power of dreams. I do not believe that after reading this book anyone will be able to interpret an entire dream but you will be able identify a few small key details from each. As the author states many times in the book God will communicate with us through dreams, they are never straight forward and consist of many riddles and symbols.

A Guide to Understanding and Interpreting Dreams

"The Ultimate Guide to Understanding the Dreams You Dream" is written to carefully guide the reader through the complex world of dreams. Author Ira Milligan maintains that in these end times God uses dreams to:

* Encourage and direct Christians in their walk with Him - Getting direction
* Warn sinners to repent
* Provide guidance to the Church
* Reveal divine information and knowledge

The subtitle of the book "Biblical Keys for Hearing God's Voice in the Night" suggests that the reader should consider the importance of recognizing the difference between a dream and a "night vision." Milligan also suggests that reader began a dream journal as the first step in learning to interpret your dreams.

The book is divided into two parts: Part One helps the reader understand the common use of the dream in God's communication with His people. This includes insights into interpreting symbols, understanding Bible numerology, and finding answers through colors. Milligan also discusses how all the creatures of creation, modes of transportation, and metals play a part in dream interpretation. I found the chapters that included rules to follow, and answers to frequently asked questions especially interesting and helpful.

Part Two provides a comprehensive Key Word Dictionary of Dream Symbols with Scriptural Illustrations. This section is a very practical tool for reference, research, and application.

"The Ultimate Guide to Understanding the Dreams You Dream" is an authoritative guide book for individual Christians, those involved in Inner Healing and Spiritual Warfare ministries, as well as for clergy and lay ministers.

Garreau's rather indifferently written tome, originally produced as a series of Washington Post articles, describes the phenomenon of Edge Cities that have sprung up in various areas of the nation, usually in close proximity to intersecting highways and urban areas. These entities are found in former rural or residential areas and contain office and retail space, a population that increases at 9 a.m. on working days, and a local perception of the Edge City as the final destination for mixed-use shopping, jobs, and entertainment. Garreau describes how developers, planners, politicians, and others have combined in such areas as Northern and Central New Jersey, Boston, Detroit, Atlanta, Phoenix, Southern California, and the San Francisco Bay region to erect these new entities. He also discusses such interesting trends as the newly emergent black upper middle class in the Atlanta environs and the neo-Civil War battle to preserve the Manassas battlefield site in Virginia from developers. After the suburbanization of America in the 50's, when people followed new highways out to new one-family homes, came the malling of America in the 60's and 70's and then, in the 80's, the high- rise office buildings that brought the jobs suburb-ward and added critical mass to dozens of ``urban'' clumps now bigger than many of the major old cities they surround. Today more people commute to work along the edge than into the old downtowns. Garreau (The Nine Nations of North America, 1981) devotes separate chapters to different ``Edge City'' regions, using them as springboards to tackle several issues. Among these are the restriction of civil liberties where the village center, as in New Jersey's Bridgewater township, is a privately owned mall; the enforced conformity in residential communities like those near Phoenix that are run by a corporation rather than a municipal government; the complications of race and class around Atlanta; the conflicts between developers' ideas of highest and best use and preservationists' devotion to sacred sites, as in the newest battle at Bull Run in Virginia. In general, Garreau approves the Edge City trend, which he justifies with a simplistic market-capitalist assumption that if that's where people are, then that's what people want. He pretty much ignores, to name just two major counterarguments, the effects of federal spending policies that favor highways over inner cities, and the wants of the people left behind or deliberately excluded from the Edge facilities. Even on issues he does consider, such as quality of life and culture on the Edge or developers' motives for building, he avoids much hard evidence and harder questions. Still, a provocative work that brings to popular attention a major restructuring that is, as Garreau says, all around us but largely ignored by professional architects and planners. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. the growth of metropolises

Edge City is an older book which describes the growth of "Edge Cities" which are basically areas outside of major cities which have taken on a life of their own.

It is an easy read. The author has a bias against these type of cities it appears, but the book is written in a pretty non-biased manner.

Just moving to the Atlanta Metro (and living inside of an "Edge City") last year it was interesting to read about the past.

Dated and repetitive

When reading non-fiction I tend to appreciate an economy of words. The author spends dozens of pages discussing relatively few ideas, without even digging very deep into those few ideas. This might have been a good read if it were aggressively edited down to half it's current volume.

Sad tale of the banal manufactured suburb

The book, as aptly panned in another review here, vacillates back and forth between utter admiration for Edge Cities and veiled disgust for their existence. Throughout the book he jumps back and forth with positive reflections on these cities, then slams them a bit later.

One thing remains constant - he's supportive of the developers (who he still calls out as short sighted), and thinks planners and architects are a bunch of whiny, unrealistic sissies. He's probably half true on both, but approaches the issues in a childish, off the cuff way. The developers who create these edge cities (circa 1992, which include places like Schaumburg, IL, Clayton, MO, and Las Colinas, TX), strive(d) to manufacture places where people could work, play, and live, and ultimately succeeded at only one of those - places for people to work. Most of the cities, with a couple notable exceptions, have turned into large office parks with the occasional house nearby.

I didn't enjoy reading this disjointed series of works that would have been better as a series of magazine articles. It doesn't have a coherent point or flow from chapter to chapter; it is quite obvious that he wrote one chapter at a time without utilizing an overall framework for his ideas. The concept of the Edge City is an intriguing, albeit very sad one - that a developer can do better in a matter of years what has taken proper cities decades.
