Excellent Return of a Classic Pulp Hero
By Barry Reese
Just finished reading the first new Spider novel in 65 years... and I have to say, it was really good!

Before I get into the story, let me talk about the book itself -- this is a digest sized paperback, affordably priced at $6.95. It feels very pulpy -- and yet classy at the same time. Everyone I've shown it to has remarked on the package itself. I really, really like this format and hope to see more of it from Moonstone and others.

The story picks up several months after the last published Spider, with Richard Wentworth in retirement following the supposed death of The Spider. He's turning 40 years old and ready to settle down with his long-suffering romantic interest, Nita Van Sloan. But just when it looks like true happiness might finally be found, someone starts killing people -- lots of people! -- by using devices that seem very familiar to Wenworth. In fact, they're weapons he's faced before... who has gotten access to the weapons of The Spider's past foes forms the mystery at the heart of the book. It's a compelling one and offers a good excuse for Wentworth to reminiscence about his past and do some soul-searching about what he's really accomplished.

All the old supporting characters are back and are utilized very well. The story is smoothly told and never lets up -- and the classic Spider tropes are here, especially the mass destruction.

Call me a heretic, but I honestly think this is the best Spider novel I've read. Admittedly, I've read a half dozen or so... but I'm definitely interested in reading more of CJ Henderson's version and it's caused me to consider seeking out more of the classic novels. Good stuff.

The only downside were quite a few typos, many of which were of the same variety, repeated again and again. But this hardly stopped me from loving the book.

Terror on the Streets of New York
By James D. Crabtree
The vigilante-hero known as the Spider tackles a resurgence of attacks, all like previous ones the Spider had put an end to: the Green Death, deadly gas attacks, super-explosives... but this time they are launched with no seeming motive, no significant gain for the terrorists. The Spider has to decide whether he will allow the world to think he is dead and work as Wentworth, a master criminologist, to solve these crimes or to return to the name and image which once caused terror for the underworld.

I read the Empire vs the Spider and found this a fascinating adaptation of the same pulp character. CJ Henderson has done a great job of bringing the pulp character and his associates back to life after such a long time. I sincerely look forward to reading more of these stories.

One step too far
By Raven
This is the Spider reborn, the same fearless crime fighter, the same merciless avenger, the same crew, only marching to the beat of a slightly different drummer. And I'm cool with that, brings to life a new chapter in the life of Richard Wentworth. The action is fast paced, the villain ruthless, the dead toll high, and the reveal of the mastermind well played out.

There was one step too far. I don't want to put in spoilers, so we will only say it like this. When the author went too far with the rebirth of The Spider was to take a well-known supporting character and have them horribly injured. Now this happened often enough in the original stories and Nina, Jackson, Ram Singh, Jenkyns, and Kirkpatrick often received wounds that threatened life, or could leave them crippled or deformed. Heck, once Jackson died at the end of the story. The point is that it was all settled at novel's end.

Not here. When a couple of major supporting cast are horribly wounded, one has never even regained conscience by novel end, leaving it up for grabs that they die, are dreadfully disfigured, crippled for life, majorly depressed as a result of injury, etc. While this makes for a lead into a new adventure, in the world of the Spider, all of the aficionados of the series KNOW there will be another adventure. It may be long in coming, as this one was, but it's always fight another day in The Spider's world.

Hopefully, CJ Hendersen will clear this up in a future novel
