A Hollywood casting director uncovers everything an actor needs to know from the audition to booking the role. (Partia) CHAPTER ONE The Five Elements of a Winning Audition One thing I find as a casting director is that the toughest thing I see talent do when they come into the audition room is struggle to keeping their dialogue real . I see it over and over again and the solution is simple. You can do this by using your energy. Talent must keep their energy up and keep the audition piece they are doing but cannot confuse the two. Energy is NOT over-acting! When you over-act, or push the dialogue, you push us away from believing your character. You didn t keep it real . When I see actors do an audition that lacks energy, I am ready to see the next actor waiting to audition; it s that simple. Energy is the emotional connection an actor brings to his or her character. So, how do you have great energy and keep the audition piece real or believable? By using the five elements I have come up with for this book and in my teachings. I love actors! They are an amazing breed of talent that wants to come in and just give us their all. Sometimes, by giving us your all, it looks like you are pushing your acting or which is what is referred to as overacting . Talk as you would talk in everyday conversation. Your energy is so important. You have to forget about the words on the script and bring your energy and emotional choice to the page. Actors will see the words on the page and think, Oh I have to punch that word -- that really is an important word! When that choice is made, the scene does not come out right because the actor is forcing a choice, not trusting their emotional choice to carry them through. Think of the famous line Jack Nicholson does in A Few Good Men when he yells, You can t handle the truth! . I would guarantee he was not thinking about punching the word handle or truth ...it just came out through his emotional choice. The words really do not matter it s what you do with them that count. The work has already been done for you by the writer. It is your job to bring those scripted words to life so that your audience (producer, director, casting director or whoever might be in the room) believes you are that character. When you get your sides, you have 5 things to decide: Who you are, where you are, what the conflict of the scene is, what is your relationship with the other characters in the scene, and what is your emotion choice or choices.

Helen McCready in my opinion is one the most trusted and respected Casting Directors in the industry. She never fails to give honest, direct, and complete advice on how to succeed in the industry. Her reputation has proven herself time and time again. If it weren't for individuals like Helen McCready I would have made a lot of mistakes and wouldn't have gotten the heads up on the industry that is so desperately needed. Thank You, Helen. You're a gem and an industry guru. --Actor - J. Lyle
I learned a lot especially about resumes. I also had some insight on what type of actress I was and what roles suit me better. Thank you so much for writing a book to teach us what and how to present ourselves in front of casting directors. Thank you also because all the times that I have seen you, you have always provided really good information. --Actor - Cira Lujan
Reading Helen McCready's book was a very enlightening experience. I've read hundreds of books during my time in Los Angeles and this was one of the best because it wasn't just a 'quick read'. Helen was very thorough in letting actors know what she likes and what she thought could be better for your audition. Helen really has a passion for the success of each actor and that's something I've rarely experienced in the past. As an actor, getting in-depth feedback on multiple genres from someone who sees hundreds of actors a day is invaluable to the success of your career. --Actor - Beau Nelson

Amazing tips every actor should know, but doesn't!
By Andrea Gannon
This is an incredibly helpful book, and will increase your bookings. I know....because it increased mine! Helen McCready is a highly successful casting director from Hollywood, working with the top names in the business. I had the great opportunity to take one of her acting workshops, and bought the book then. When I purchased it, I wasn't sure if it would offer any new info that I hadn't heard from other professionals before. Boy, was I wrong! This is filled....FILLED with tips of what casting directors look for, audition tips that are very specific, and ways to increase bookings. I was just cast in a SAG film and give much of the credit to Helen's helpful advice!! I highly recommend this book for ANY actor who would like to improve their success rate! (It's different from most of these type of books, trust me).

Learning to book the job
By HWPHollywood
If you are an actor, you have to audition - plain and simple but auditioning is anything but "plain and simple" for the amateur or professional actor. There are so many opportunities out there for actors but, unfortunately, they make mistakes in the audition room that cost them the job. In this book, "Audition & Book It", uncovers everything an actor needs to know from the audition to booking the role and how not to make the common mistakes most actors tend to do.
This book is up to date with what Hollywood casting directors expect from the actor. You will learn about having a winning headshot and resume, preparing for the audition, bringing energy into the room, props, pantomime, movement, monologues, improvisation and her "5 Elements of A Winning Audition" to help you nail the role. "Audition & Book It!" is a no-nonsense book written to heighten your odds at becoming a true working actor in the business. A must for any actor serious about working in Hollywood.
